Problems outputing back to camera from computer

I had a lot of problems last night after finishing editing a video. When I tried to output the finished video back to the camera (Canon GL-1 from Premier 6.0), the image cut in and out on the camera. When it did, it caused the playback on the computer to stutter, as well.

I then tried outputting from Pinnacle Studio DV 7, and the same thing happened. I tried everything I can think of. I removed and replaced my firewire card, checked the wire and plugged it into different plugs, shutdown all the other running processes.

I really think it is something in the computer, software wise. Even when the image was still on the computer, the image on the camera flickered on and off (whether the tape was moving, or on stop).

Other information - Homemade computer, running Windows XP Home, 768 meg of ram, Athlon XP 1800 processor, scratch hard drive disc, TI Firewire card. This system has worked perfectly for 9 videos, and now develops the hiccups!

    Thanks!

I have had similar problems with both Premiere and Ulead editing software. I tracked the problem back to one of two possible causes: 1) I installed a piece of software that overwrote a DLL file and caused a hardware level conflict or 2) autoupdate from Microsoft provided an update that caused a problem.

Here are a couple of things you might want to try:

    1) Uninstall the Firewire card in Windows XP Control Panel under the Device Manager tab of the System Properties window. Reboot your computer and the Plug and Play should find the card and install the proper driver. Sometimes, Windows updates will cause problems with devices that are already installed.

    2) Uninstall and reinstall the Adobe and Pinnacle Software. I would install Adobe last.

    3) If neither of the above works, I would try another firewire cable.

Let me know how you make out.

I've tried uninstalling the firewire card, it did no good. Then, I actually pulled the firewire card, and reinstalled it. Still no good.

Since it does it across all software, and all versions, I am assuming it is a hardware vs. software problem. If the card and cable capture fine, is it still possible that the problem is the cable or card?

What is annoying (as always) is that this worked fine until recently.

Just an FYI, in case anyone cares. My firewire card had gone bad. I replaced, and everything is working fine.
