I have Adobe premiere for my PC, but I want to switch to a Mac and don't know if the software will work on it, or if I would have to buy a new version...

    Anyone know?

You will have to buy a different version of premiere for use on the mac. However, if you are switching to the mac I would not reccomend premeire. Get either final cut pro or final cut express. Much, Much better.

This could open a 'can of worms', but why would you want to switch to Mac if you're already a PC user? Nowadays, there's no real advantage to doing so. Adobe, the industry leader in desktop NLE, has dropped Mac as a platform for their video editing software. Sony, is poised to release a whole series of video editing computers based on Vegas. Both Vegas and Premiere Pro are more than a match for FCP - the only competitive video editing software left that's solely for Mac. I'd say the future of desktop NLE resides squarely on the PC side. You may be taking "one step forward and two steps back".

I seriously have to disagree. Final Cut Pro is 20 billion times better than Premier. Adobe is hardly "the industry leader" in NLE systems. While Photoshop is the best, premier fails to amount to anything besides a pile of crap. it can harly be called professional. (i know, i've used it) FCP4 is much more flexible than premier and much easier to use. For a true industry leader, look for Avid. For the best and easiest to use NLE, go with FCP4. Mac is a much better OS (No nasty virus, simple layout, UNIX based, almost uncrashable). Why switch? because Mac is the better system.

Mac vs. PC debates are not allowed on this forum. But, debates on accuracy in reporting are. Avid is the NLE leader as far as dedicated systems, but "desktop" NLE is another category entirely. It refers to software or software + hardware packages installed on personal computers. Avid's entry, "Avid Express Pro", is hardly the industry leader in this class! An indicator of industry leadership is market share. The latest survey I've seen shows Premiere at 18%, Vegas Video at 13% and FCP at 10%.
As for a comparison of the top DESKTOP NLEs including Premiere Pro, here's a comprehensive review that shows the position of FCP compared to the latest breed of PC NLEs NLE Comparitive Review.

As you may be able to discern, FCP is hardly 'top dog' - certainly not the only 'professional video editor' and is not demonstrating a '20 billion times' advantage over Premiere Pro. However, if you are limited to strictly Apple solutions, then you don't have much of a choice, unless you upgrade to PC, you wouldn't even be able to compare the latest Premiere Pro with FCP. Current PC users however, would gain nothing from switching to a computer system with so small a market share, when the best examples of current NLE software runs only on PC.
