When you connect the camera to the computer without an NLE running, can you access the files?  If so, just copy them onto your scratch drive and import them into Premiere from there.

i can. i have them on my computer. in premiere as soon as the dialogue box comes up for me to import premiere crashes, it does not even give the chance to choose what files i want or where the are located

Stacy, try re-installing PP and never go to iPhoto to import, just go to the main file and import it that way.
