Permission to use video clips

    I'm producing a documentary and I'd like to use some clips from Hollywood.  I can find the owners on the web.  Question: how do I approach them?  Do I send a letter, or is there an agreement I should already have that I can send to them?  Anyone have experience or ideas to share?
