I am in the market to buy a new camcorder and I have been recommended by friends to buy the Sony DSR-PD170, Panasonic AG-DVX100A, or the Canon XL-1S. I would like to specifically use it for cinema. If you could give your suggestions that would be great.

Of this group, only the Panny will truly imitate film projection speed with progressive scan. But be sure you understand the workflow through a NLE and the process (and cost) of transferring your finished work to film, if by cinema that's what you envision doing.

Yea the Panasonic is the way to go. The Cannon XL1s is such an old camera. It is due for an update!

Are you actually going to be transferring your footage to film? If you are, then yes go with the panasonic, but if not, then really it's a toss up. Each cam has it's ups and downs. You won't get the complete "film look" from the panasonic cam alone. Most people misinterprete the 24p function of this cam and think that just shooting in 24p gets this look, but that's completely false. It's true you can use some gamma settings along with the progressive to get some that resembles a look slightly relative to film, but unless you actually transfer the video to film, you'll never get the authentic look. Hope this helps

If you want more info on the advantages to each of the cams, let me know and I can do my best to fill you in
