Parabolic Mics question

   hello, i was always curious how in movies they'll have a long shot and you can hear the characters. I always wonder what kind of mic set up they used. I heard that Its a parabolic mic or voice over or wireless, but i think  there is a different technique that no one knows about. If you got any insight please let me know.

   Just a separate audio capture at the source...brought together in post ...right?

    Either they are wearing mics and have a recorder in their pocket .. or the audio was added later in post.
