Im currently attending a school for digital media.. my budget is well lets say 500 bucks. What i need in a camera is firewire or usb and high quality video i can download onto my comp and take out the perfect frame from the shot for all my graphics.

My last Camcorder was the Panasonic AG-456UP which recorded in SVHS mode. I am interested in purchasing a new camcorder for personal as well as commercial purposes. I like the idea of the convenience of recording directly to DVD as well as not having to lug a large camera around. The prices of the Hitachi DZ-MV580A and the Sony DCR-DVD 201 are reasonable but may not produce the quality of image that I am looking for. Since I will be producing DVDs to be shown on TV screens, I am concerned that having only 1-megapixel would not be adequate for a good clear picture with no tailing ends. Perhaps, I should look at the Pro-sumer videocams and forget about the DVD aspect. If so, which camcorder would satisfy my needs. Most of my work is done outside involving scenery.

    Hello Jordan,
Speaking as a beginner - I have purchaced both the Panasonics PV-DV953 ($1250) and the AG-DVC30 ($2200). Both are excellent DV camcords and both have 3CCDs, both give you controls you need as a pro / prosumer. Shutter, Iris (apreture) gain (is a little funky w/ the DVC 30), etc. The biggest differences other then the price is the chip size, The DVC 30 has larger chips. The resolution in the DVC 30 as a result of the larger 3 CCD produces clearer images w/ very vivid colors - there is no comparison w/ the DV953. The DVC30 is considered professional but still I logged quility stuff w/ the "953" and worked up the results in FCP4. I use both cameras and am happy. I think that the DVC 30 needs a better system for audio gain one that is visual.
    * If Panasonic is listening I have more to say.
