hey there. i'm really new to video editing, etc. and i've been searching for the right editing software to go with my camcorder for several months. i just got a new computer recently and have found that through USB 2.0, i get a faster transfer rate from camcorder to computer than if i were to use firewire. but i was reading that most mini DV cams use firewire for transferring and editing video. is it possible to do it through USB instead?

USB 2.0 is actually quite a bit slower than FireWire, especially for something like dumping video. You'll be hard pressed to find a camera and editing app that will let you use USB 2.0. Besides, you dump off the camera in real time (ie, to an editing app), how could you make it "faster?"

Go with firewire. Choosing a camcorder based on whether it has USB 2.0 will restrict your options significantly and both firewire and USB 2.0 are nearly equivalent in transfer speed. You can probably get a camcorder with firewire and a firewire PCI card (if your PC doens't have firewire) for less than you can get an equivalent camcorder (with all the features) that has USB2.0.
