No tape Audio going through deck

   I have an audio/tape problem & actually thought it was my Sony deck. I paid an expensive tech guy to come to the studio, only to find that audio from certain tapes will not play on my decks, but will play fine on my cameras.
   
   Is it a matter of deck settings??.......FCP pref settings?.......or is it that the audio can not be played/logged on certain decks?.......if the latter, is there a viable option????
