I know my questions may be elementry and I'm sorry. What the bottom line is I want to make dvd's from high 8 tapes and vhs tapes. I need help on what software and capture card to buy. I have a via chipset with AMD64 3400 cpu 1gig of 3200ddr ram. I would appreciate any input from you pros so I don't mess up and get software or hardware that doesn't work and will do it in the least amount of time. Thanks for any help.

Ken, I am also just getting started and was hoping to see an answer to your question. Maybe by getting it to the top of the page someone will speak up.

Look for a digital Video Converter there! As far as software goes what do you use to edit DV? From there you can bring it into any DVD Authoring app. There are also some consumer products out there that will do it in one fell swoop but you don't have as much control as wit these canopus products.

You don't mention whether you own a DV camcorder. Many of them will do the conversion on the fly from S-video/RCA connections out of the VCR to the cam and firewire from cam to PC. D-8 cameras will read Hi8 tape and play it via firewire to the PC. I've done much of this with a Sony TRV 525 D-8. When it won't read out I send it to VHS and capture that. If you don't own or can't borrow a cam the Canopus product is a much cheaper solution over buying one.
