Having trouble with new forum software? Please post a reply in this thread.

The new forum software seems very flakey.  Navegating from forum to forum produces Internet Explorer Error Windows saying it cannot go to that site (even though it did). And returning to the previos page puts you where it should for a couple seconds, then jumps to the top of the page.

Also, now there is less info in the member profiles, and in the members list of posts. Also, the forums seem less organized.....did we lose a layer of hierarchy?

I liked the old forum software better. (And what happened to the smilies?)

I prefer it how it was, too - but my main problem is that the pages are taking forever to appear. Whatever info is being retrieved from ads.videomaker is causing major delays.

After looking around very briefly, I think I like the old software better!

If you're having trouble with IE, let us encourage you to try a better browser. We strongly recommend using Firefox or Opera instead.

I've confirmed the certificate error that pops up in Internet Explorer 6. This doesn't appear to happen in IE 7 or Firefox. There are a significant number of folks using IE6, so I'll leave ads turned off until I resolve this issue.

I'd like to also encourage anyone using Internet Explorer 6 to upgrade to a more modern browser. If you're a fan of Internet Explorer, that'd be Internet Explorer 7. If you're not attached to Internet Explorer or using Windows 2000 (IE7 is not an option on Windows 2000), I suggest using Firefox or Opera.

However sticking with IE6 won't keep the ads from turning back on when the problem is fixed. ;)

Just in case you didn't notice, the box used for typing a post can be made larger by simply dragging the lower right corner.

    admin,

Be advised, I was using IE7 when encountering the problems I reported.

I was and still am using FireFox but all seems OK now - maybe that's because the ads are off but I don't know...

What is the most used browser? Is it still IE6? If it is, why would you want to make a forum that would not work well with that? I am using IE 7 and had problems earlier today, but it seams to be better now.

Here's a rough snapshot of the last month:

    • 29% - Firefox
    • 29% - Internet Explorer 7
    • 28% - Internet Explorer 6
    • 10% - Safari
    • 3% - Other

Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 continue to grow, Safari tends to stay the same and Internet Explorer 6 continues to decline.

When designing, we start with making everything work in Firefox. Opera, Safari and the other standards based browsers will render the pages with very few quirks. After this initial design and testing phase we work on hacks for Internet Explorer. IE 7 is pretty good and doesn't require too many hacks to make it behave. IE 6 on the other hand requires many hacks and imposes many limitations on design. We implement hacks to make the pages render as closely as possible in IE6. Sometimes this means making the page not quite as pretty in IE6, however it must be functional in IE6.

When all is said and done, our goal is to make pages render properly in all of the common browsers, including IE6.

    Please keep the feedback coming.

There is now! I've added a search form to the sidebar of the main forums page as well as the pages for each sub-forum.

It's really personal preference but, I liked the old format better...

    I'll get used to this.

I had a terrible time navigating this format- sorry :(  I tried to upload an avatar without luck.  Just trying to find how to update the profile was a search and destroy mission. Here's a snapshot of kbvp.com  I'm heavy into video content and a great deal of effort was put into getting the site user friendly to the predominate browsers.  EI6 is still the dominate/preferred browser.  Good luck getting the forum "tweaked" :)

This new format is the worst example of readability I have seen yet.  I strongly suggest moving back to the original version.   No better way to kill off readership than making something unreadable.

    KBPV,

To upload an avatar, try naming a 100x100 pixel jpg with the handle you use in this forum, so that would be "KBVP.jpg".

(BTW, I'm slowly getting use to this new forum, but the old style still seemed better to me.)

Also, Firefox does a slightly better job on this forum.

Please change the forums back!! The new format is HORRIBLE. Is there any way I can change it back or you can give us an option? If the forums stay this way I can tell you right now, I won't visit them very often if at all.

*EDIT* Sorry, that was my initial frustration coming out. The way the different forums/threads are cataloged makes it harder to navigate and find what you're looking for. I realize your objective may have been to make them different from other forums, but to be honest, it's better to keep it uniform and simple. It's not the look of the forum that makes a difference, it's the information that matters the most.

Ken-  Thanks, but as you can see I'm still a shadow person.  When I load the avatar, the page goes blank and says "Done".  I'm DONE.  This is a waste of time.  I'll check back every once in a while.  Good luck to the staff.
