I love music vids - making them & watching them.
What I don't like is the plethora of bad music out there that people think a video will make better.
If the song sucks, very little can be done in a video to make it better (unless you're talkin' parody).
That said, I am very eclectic in my musical tastes but have definite dislikes...
If you were to watch a pop music video, what types of things would you expect to see? What conventions are most important? For example, does the video need to have some sort of story?
My personal preference is a "story based" production, though there are quite a few productions that adhere more to a more esoteric or interpretive aspect that I occasionally enjoy. Like Bruce Paul, "eclectic" is a good description for my overall tastes in music videos. The pseudo psycho stuff (weird backgrounds, performing on a dozen locations just because they can) isn't my bag.
I'd say there are three main types of music videos; ones of the band (fades and layering of different angles while they play; Story telling; and random (where what you see and hear really have nothing to do with each other.
If the creative aspect of the video is solely on you, I'd try finding a song you like and listen to it a good number of times. You'd be surprised what your third eye will start to see as your brain starts putting its own version of what the music portrays visually.

Thankyou! You have been very helpful! :)

Hi Jess,
In addition to the article composite suggested, we also have a new video series on how to make a music video. Be sure to check out
Forming Ideas for Music Videos
and keep an eye on our video page for a new training video each week.
the main thing that is irritating about pop music videos is the music.
Hi. We recently released this music video as an unsigned band. It's a superhero/comic book inspired idea. The whole video was self produced, the set was built from scratch, all the props and costumes, of which there are plenty are homemade by one guy! and in my opinion are quite something. They only way we got this video to work was through collaboration. We had no budget but had 36 people working on the video/after effects and all came together to form, what I think is a pretty good effort.
I hope you like it................

Didsy - Very nicely done. Not my favorite sound but highly enjoyable with really good use of FX (I'm always a sucker for the AHA/Take On Me look) and overall great production values.
A+++
Didsy, ditto what Birdcat said! I actually liked the music. Super (hero) idea for the story behind the music. There is a great amount of work and preparation involved putting this together. Everybody on your crew deserves kudos. Keep shooting.
Here is a music video I produced a couple of months ago that I'm really happy with the outcome.

Anyone ever been burned by promises for exposure for free work?

I want to cut my teeth, but maybe a waste of time?
I've done things for no or low charge when I needed some practical experience in that genre (garage & wannabe bands for example) but after THAT, there's MasterCard.
