I want to edit a 20-40 minute video using moviemaker on a new Sony laptop with a 40GB harddrive. I want to import via firewire to moviemaker, edit the movie and burn it onto the DVD burner included with the laptop. I only need to do a few fades and wipes, title at beginning and credits at the end and edit some audio separate from the video. (cutaways) Can I do this with moviemaker? The title choices I saw in the program look great on the screen, but will they look good on the finished DVD? For very basic editing will I be fine with moviemaker or do I need something like Final Cut Pro Express?

Final Cut Express will not work on your laptop, Final Cut is for Macs and you have a PC. If Movie maker is free and already on your computer, why not play around with it? See what it does. If you need sometihng more robust, i'd reccomend Sony's Screenblast. It should have everything you need. http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/Products/ShowProduct.asp?PID=856

    Hi Aim...

Couple of things, and you might have to set me straight. As a FCP user and a Windows Movie Maker dabbler, I'm not sure if you can get the amount of video you need to do your production you need to get into your computer with a 40 gig hard drive. You might need more storage space...secondly, Windows Movie Maker is a little handcuffing because you actually have to construct your titling in Windows Paint program and export it into your collection/project. I don't know if you've considered this. It's kind of a hassle to do this, and you cannot scroll any of your titling from what I've seen. As for simple effects on WMM, I've only been able to make dissolves in WMM...perhaps all this has changed since I've dabbled in it, but for inexperienced movie makers out there, it's a good beginning program to understand the basics of editing. I do know that my iMovie application within my Mac allows you to do this kind of editing with simple effects and graphics.

As far as exporting, mine only allows me to save and email my video, so that's as far as I've gotten with WMM.

Just my 2 cents. If I'm wrong please clarify for me. Thanks, and good luck.

Yea the person above me is talkign about windows Movie Maker 1. Windows Movie Maker 2 is actually surprisingly powerful however it might not be what you ahve on your laptop. it is a free download here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=82887484-6f21-43e2-b4e2-051f72c11a77&displaylang=en

and it has a quite formidable array of transitions and video effects and should be plenty sufficient for what you ahve in minda. Also there is great deal of ways to do titles. I suggest donwlaoding it and just checking out he feautres on it but im pretty sure that it will be more thna sufficient.

Aslo there are several options for finsishing the movie including saving to DV tape, burning to CD or DVD, Saving to Hard Drive, Emailing, or Uplaoding o the Web
