I have noticed the low cost alternative to Sony's .08 wide angle adapter on E-bay--the Merkury Optics .05 and .045 adapters--which are hundreds less. Does anyone have any experience with this product. Is the adapter too good to be true, a case of you get what you pay for or somewhere in between?

I can't comment on that brand, but I bought Opteka lenses (wide & telephoto) off of eBay after Googling-up comments from other users. The comments were all positive (though none were from pros). I wanted them for my wife. I usually am the one who needs to change lenses, and I use Century brand, but for the price I figured that she may as well have some in her kit also.

I haven't done any serious testing, but we did use the wide angle lens for some informal shots and didn't notice any quality issues. I am certain though, that under more critical testing, some differences would appear between the cheap brands and the intermediate (Century Optics) brand.

Thanks, Hank. I have to presume that these lower costs adapters don't "zoom through" well, if at all and most wide angle shots are naturally kept wide. Aside from edge bending, I think I could live with any residual artifacts from a cheap adapter. Still deciding, but I appreciate your input.

I just recently acquired the Sony VCL-HG0872 Wide conversion lens adapter. I'm very happy I held out for this product and not risk money on the cheaper Mercury Optic lenses found on E-Bay. There is no edge artifacting with the Sony adapter. It handles "zoom through" like I would expect and I found it on Amazon for an afforable price.
