Low Light Situations

Hey I'm planning on getting a good low light camera (gl2/vx2000 etc.). I've never used a 3CCD camera before and I know I've heard alot of you in here say get a good low light camera. My question is what do you do in low light situations when you have a good low light camera. Since the camera is good in low light do you have to make minor adjustment or just not do any adjustments. I'm sure it depends on how dark the situation is. I'm not talking totally dark but I guess say as dark as a reception or something like that. I'm just trying to get some input so I'll have a heads up in this type of situation! Thanks!!!

A "good low-light" camcorder won't shoot well in dim lighting if the operator doesn't know what he/she is doing. To achieve good performance in low light, the operator either lowers the shutter speed (1/60 sec or less), opens up the iris, increases signal gain (last resort, can degrade image a bit), or some combination of these actions. A consumer camera like a VX2000/2100 might have a Low Light auto-exposure mode, which does these things for you.

Finally, you'll learn that you can't rely too much on automatic focus when shooting in low light. Get used to using your manual focus ring or dial.

The VX2000 has manual exposure settings you dial in. The results can amaze you in low light. I couldn't find a bear in the trees by a salmon stream with my eyes, but did through the viewfinder with exposure adjustment. It also allows up to 12 db of gain (might be 18) if you set it to go there when it "decides" it needs to. The gain adds surprisingly little noise in my experience.
