My day job deals with several types of lasers in their manufacturing and the running joke is to never look into the laser with your remaining good eye.
Bad joke aside, I know of people that have had eye issues themselves at these types of events because they happen to be looking in the direction of the laser, welder's flash and even retinal problems to mention a couple. some of these places count on reflex aversion, the same reflex that makes you close your eyes or turn your head after a photographer's flash, or the brightness being too painful to continue to look at it as their only level of protection. Problem is not everyone reacts the same way.
It only makes sense that electronics would have an issue because they have optics that are focusing the scene right onto the sensor. But then I know not everyone really understands what a laser can do either, other then irritate the snot out of their cat or dog.
I'm surprised more cameras don't have similar problems with the sun when doing time lapse sunrises and sunsets.
