I am in the market to purchase a new computer system that can handle video editing. Any PC recommendations under $3000? Has anyone had any experience with the DVLine Orison Laptops?

Please advise - I am not interested in building my own system - so I look forward to your recommendations.

    Thanks!

    Ellen,

Almost any current Windows Computer or Laptop can handle video editing. Even units in the $800 price range.

Look for a brand name unit (Dell, Sony, HP), and when considering laptops, try the keyboard out at a local retailer. Also, unless you plan to add an external video monitor to the laptop, get one with the widest screen possible.

Make sure the computer has a firewire connection, a USB 2 port, a svhs out connection, 512meg ram, and 60 gig hard drive.

Look for Windows XP or Windows XP Pro, and expect to add an external firewire hard drive to hold your video editing projects.

Looking in Best Buy and Circuit City over the weekend, I saw several sub $1,000 laptops and Desktops that would be perfect for video editing.

Invest in Vegas editing software for widest compatibility and highest reliability.

I've used Vegas on laptops, desktops, and even ancient clunkers - and video editing using Vegas works reliably.

The problem I have with DVLine, is that they are simply another PC vendor, who happens to be focusing on the digital video editing market. They don't offer computers that are any different than what you could obtain from numerous vendors, yet they seem to add a 'premium' price tag because their website is called "DVLine". The best way to buy a PC for video editing or any purpose, is know what you want inside the computer - then surf around until you find the best price. There are thousands of vendors looking for your business. You have the power - not them. You name your price. If you take the time, you can save hundreds of dollars.

If you like, use DVLine as a reference. Copy the published specs of their computers, then use them to compare other offerings. I usually start at http://www.pricewatch.com. Pay attention to the brand names for motherboard, sound, video card, DVD burner, hard drive and you can't go wrong.

I got my laptop from http://www.pcnirvana.com It's a great machine. The big advantage with going to a non-name brand is you don't get all of that extra crap like AOL and msn services. They just funk up the computer. I highly recommend pc nirvana for video editing laptops.

oh yea, you will most certainly need a high capacity external hard drive to hold all of your material.
