Info on Hi Def Camcorders, differences

   I want to be able to provide a written explanation to somebody as to why a $4,000 prosumer camcorder that is labelled hi def is better quality than the low-end 'hi def' camcorders.  I know about lens glass, audio features but where I need the nitty gritty info is in the electronics.  For example, the sensors in the pro cameras are larger.  I understand that leads to better resolution, but the person I'm trying to convince needs the electronic reasons why.  He sees 1080i and thinks it's all the same... Can somebody point me to a good document that explains all the diffrerences in the electronics specs of cameras?
