It sounds good, John. I would reconsider the Maxtor drive, though. I've built and maintained hundreds of PCs corporately and personally for longer than you've been alive and for some reason, Maxtor drives have exhibited a consistently high failure rate (more than all other brands combined!). How about IBM or Western Digital?

You must have a lot of experience, since you've used several Maxtors and been through two Western Digitals already. It's very impressive considering your age. It seems that based on a little research into manufacturers of dedicated professional video editing computers/workstations, that the IBM Deskstar series are one of the most specified hard drives. What do you think about them? Also, would you recommend using a mobile racks to mount dedicated video hard drives? They are pretty reasonably priced, and it would make it extremely easy to purchase a few hard drives, and mobile racks, so you can easily swap them out as needed.

As far as software goes, is Win 2000 sufficient, or would Win XP pro be more appropriate? Also, what video editing software do you use?

well ive read that for DV you either want win2000 or XP Pro and ill probably eventually upgrade to XP pro but for now ill just be starting with Win2000. Also my dad works at a bank and they ahve recently forclosed on an office building and in bankruptcy court got a couple dell servers with each ahving like a 100gig drive so im thinking i might be able to get those
