How good are USB 2.0 hard drives?

I have a friend with a laptop asking me questions about finding more storage space for his video. I would like to recommend a good outboard 7200 rpm USB 2.0 hard drive, but honestly, I have no experience. Has anyone had any "bottle-necking" problems with these harddrives? Can you capture to them?

I've been using a Maxtor USB 2.0 Hard Disk Drive (160 gig) for 4 months now with absolutely no problems. I actually even capture directly to the drive from firewire, through my computer to the usb drive - no problems whatsoever. I use the 5000DV.

I bought a "Maxtor 3000LE 5400 RPM 120 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive" from amazon.com about 3 months ago, too. I needed it to store a lot of video data that wouldn't fit on my internal 30GB drive, and it works great. It requires a wall outlet, so I'm not sure if it's what your laptop-using friend is after. But, if he does plan on purchasing it, tell him that I'd appreciate it if he would use the following link:

Thanks for the input--encouraging. My friend travels internationally a lot and I'm sure he would want to be able to power his USB drive in a variety of voltage standards. Does anyone know about any Maxtors or Western Digitals that run by battery or off of the laptop power? I suppose a voltage converter is an option, but it's just another thing to carry.

I found this: USB Hard Drive. It's only 20 Gig, but there may be more out there.
