I got Vegas 4.0. I have a problem playing AVI files. I used to never have problems playing AVI files on or off Vegas. Since then, I've reformatted my CPU twice, and each time I've needed to download Xvid to play these on WMP, but it still won't play on my Vegas. Only the audio will show on the timeline. :( I was wondering if any one of you nice people could inform me on how to fix this problem. I've heard Xvid isn't good for Vegas, but I tried before I got Xvid and it still didn't work. Help me? DO I download something, remove something, and will I still be able to play AVI files on WMP?

    Big Thanks! :P

my guess is that your problem lies in the codec that your avi file is encoded to. Vegas does a great job with just about any codec I have put into it, but there are a couple I have had trouble getting it to work with. Your xvid comment makes me think that may be the problem.

How do you put codecs onto Vegas? I'm not totally clueless on technology, but I'm pretty bad with codecs. And where's a good spot to download plain codecs, just codecs?

Do you have a video card installed into your computer?

If not, that is probably why it happened. A friend of my have the exactly the same problem and the picture won't show, but only the audio works. It happened on both editing programs, Vegas and Pinnacle Studio.

She will take the computer out to have the video card installed then it should be ok by then....Hope so!

    Thanks!

    I have the same problem.

I am using Vegas 5 and when i add my AVI file to the track, only the audio shows up. When I add video from my camcorder, both audio and video show up. I got the AVI file from my Fuji F10 digital camera. Does Sony not accept AVI files? Am I suppose to convert it to something?

FYI: I'm just a beginner. I just started getting into video editing.

Not all AVI files are the same, there can be differences in the codecs. As alluded to in an earlier post, this is likely to be where your problem lies. Find out what codecs are being used in the non-working AVI's and install those codecs.

I've had good luck with this utility (and it's free) : http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ . It's designed for AVI in particular but can also tell you more about other file types as well. For example, I was able to use it to sort out contest entries that were using Dolby Digital, MPEG and PCM audio so I'd have less work burning the DVDs that were distributed to the judges.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and you guys are correct about the codec b/c I went to the source, the Sony Website. I did a search in their knowledgebase section and here is what they said.

    "Question
Your still camera can shoot small AVI videos, but they don't open in VideoFactory, Movie Studio, or Vegas, or they just show the audio, not the video.

    Answer
The video that most current still image cameras shoot actually is what is called Motion JPEG video. It is a series of still frames added together to create a moving picture. In order for these AVI or MPEG files to open correctly in Vegas, Movie Studio, or VideoFactory, you'll need a third party codec installed. Here are two such third party codecs:

    Morgan Multimedia
    Pegasus Imaging Corporation

I haven't tried it out yet, but I'll let you know how it works out.

    Here's the support site: http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/support/default.asp

    Thanks again.
