    Tim:

If I were you, I'd look for a Sony D8 camcorder. I know for sure that you can get a Sony Hi8 camcorder for less than $300, and those are fine, broadcast-quality cameras (I have a 5-year old one), but probably no firewire capability. The D8 is Sony's upgrade for Hi8, & it tends to be cheaper than Sony's more upscale DV models, and it has firewire. You might also look at entry level DV camcorders from Panasonic & JVC. If you are not in a huge hurry, you might was a few months & see if DV camcorder prices drop in price more as new camcorders with mini-DVD recording capability catch on.

Pay close attention to the ads AFTER X-mas, & browse websites like Crutchfield to do your homework before you go in for the kill.

I'm looking at the same price range.Check the stores after Christmas.A good website for info is CNET.COM. Some to consider are 1)Samsung SV23(I'm not sure of the letters but the #'s are correct)about $400 now.
    2)Canon ZR60 $400 now.
    3)JVC D30 $350 now.
I'm leaning towards the Samsung for a couple of reasons.
It has a night mode that allows the camera to shoot in low light.O lux. The lower the lux the better it will shoot in low light. It lets you record video clips on the memory stick in MPEG4.With this feature you could send high quality video over the internet. The length of the video you could record depends on the memory stick you put in.

I've been looking at Sony's current line of D8 & miniDV consumer camcorders, & I'm perplexed by the apparent lack of composite audio inputs & outputs. As I understand it, there's just one jack that combines composite audio. Here's my question: if I were to either input hi-fi stereo to the camcorder or output stereo to an editing VCR or DVD, how is that kept separate if there's one jack? This seems like a step backwards. I have an analog Hi8 Sony with composite video and audio jacks that serve as both inputs and outputs, and the audio is split into left and right channels with corresponding jacks. This is very handy for use with a hi-fi S-VHS VCR. Can any Sony users of D8 and/or miniDV explain how this now works? Does this one jack serve asn an iput AND output? I realize that firewire is the obvious alternative, but I'm not set up for that yet. Any advice is appreciated.
