free video splitter

   I want to shorten this long video by deleting material on
   it to make a video of 10 minutes in length but S12 cannot handle editing
   the file. (Timeline will not play,  S12 will not respond etc.)

    

   I am looking for a workaround. Has anybody experienced similar difficulties with large video files??

   Is there a program that might work to successfully cut the 2.5 hour mpg2 video to several sections that S12 might handle??

   I'd recommend using Mpeg Streamclip to open your clip, setting shorter in-out points, then exporting the clips you need.
