    Hey VM readers,

We're re-working our downloads section, where we link to various free resources for video production you can find on the net. Be it software, sound effects, royalty free music, test charts, backgrounds etc. As long as it's free!

Do you have a favorite free application you use? A great site to download sound effects? an out of copyright music collection?

Please share it in the thread below. Our editors will take a look through all the suggestions and add them to our soon to be updated and re-organized downloads section.

    Thanks,

    JB

    Flip Flop

Turns your Mac laptop or desktop into an on-set video monitor. It'll even flip your image if you're using a 35mm adapter.

    Enjoy!

I use Nattress's free plugins on a regular basis. They also make more robust plugins for a price, one of them is a good "smart de-interlacer" filter .

And I found Stib's filters to be useful too:

Blender is a free cross-platform 3D animation creation application. Surprisingly powerful.
Available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and others. Extensive on-line docs.

    Enjoy! :)

This may not seem to fit because I'm addressing a couple of posts that I've had to remove..

"Royalty free" music does not mean it is public domain and can be passed around freely. What it means is that you pay for the right to use it in your videos, but you do not have the right to sell, lend or give it to others to use in their videos. The same goes for royalty free stock video, etc.

    Hi Hank -

Very true - I have searched vigorously and all the sites I have posted have at least claimed that they are both free to use (for the assets listed) and royalty free. Of course, each person needs to determine whether the claims satisfies their own level of comfort as I've said before I am not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV.

Not to worry, Bruce - we all appreciate your posts and my post had nothing to do with yours.

I was addressing a couple of posts (since removed) that were asking people to give or sell copies of music they'd obtained. It is fine for the creator/copyright holder to sell or give away his work for use by others, but that (unless specifically stated in the rights) does not give those others the right to give or sell copies.

Go look at my blog, Videomaker! It's called "Free Stuff: Making Movies for Nothing" and there will be tons of chapters about free software. The chapters already up include Blender, suggested above by Ken Hull.

There's an appendix coming this weekend which will have a bunch of websites with stock footage, etc. Also coming this weekend are at least 10 new chapters of video, audio, 3D, photo and graphic design software to add to the 11 already up, which will also be updated.

I'm willing to make a deal with you. ultimatemediaman@gmail.com

jburkhart and mmontgomery, i'm talking to you!
