External mic with Canon GL2

   Hello,
   I just got my Canon GL2. I'm a novice.
   I plan to use it to make instructional videos for violin students.
   I would like to use my existing external mics and preamp.
   Can I plug those in to the AV adapter or the mic adapter without buying the Canon ma300 mic adapter.
   If I plug my mics (amplified by the preamp) into the AV adapter, will that work and will it shut off the built in mic?
   The instruction manual does not deal adequately with these questions.
   Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
