Although I have been shooting still photos for a lot of years, I am totally new to the world of video.

I recently bought a Samsung SCL-860 video camera that shoots Hi8mm film.

Where can I get information on how to EDIT this format
    of film.

I would like to add soundtracks, delete bad sections,
move sections of footage, fade in/out, adjust exposure, add special effects, crop as required...etc.
After all of the editing, I'd like to create a final DVD or VHS tape of my edited masterpiece.

I assume some sort of software would be required.
Or would I have to do it the old fashioned way, roll the footage between two spools/reels, and literally cut/splice?

Please advise me on how to edit this Analog format film?

    Thanks,

Most basic software will do what you described. The harest part is getting your video into the computer. To do this you will need an analog->Digital converter. Pinnacle makes a nice bundle pack that will have everything you need. But shop around. There are lots of options out there. If you have access to a Digital 8 camcorder, you can use that camcorder as a converter. Digital 8 can read Hi-8 tapes as well as red/record to digital 8 using the same hi-8 tapes. Then you could connect your video camera to any modern computer via firewire to import your footage.

    Thanks KingKool,
You are right on the money. Pinnacle has several software packages that will not only edit the digital video as I hoped, but convert the analog format (which also includes VHS and others) to a digital format. They call it "Analog Capture".

As luck would have it, there are dozens of other manufacturers of video editing software that will also do the same thing...and more. So, as usual it comes down to how much $$$ do I want to put out, and how much of a learning curve I am willing to endure. These packages range anywhere between $50 and $600.
I guess Speilberg has nothing to worry about yet.

Anyway, thanks again for the tip KingKool,
