I'm about to buy a DVD burner for my computer.

    I see DVD-R and DVD+ burners.

Which of the two formats are expected to be remain the most compatible, if I hand out DVDs to friends?

    Thanks,

Good Question. I couldn't find a definitive answer to this one, so I bought a Sony dual-format burner. What I did notice is that DVD+R writes faster, so I use them mostly. I've never encountered a problem playing a DVD-R or a DVD+R on my Phillips stand-alone player.

I also have the Sony burner for precisely the reason why you asked the question. I didn't know which was best or most used. The answer is really based upon what youe friends or clients can use. This was a much bigger problem a couple of years ago, but the issue is mute for newer dvd players.

I got my first DVD burner years ago (2001) which happened to be a Pioneer 103 DVD-r/RW. Later down the road I got the 104. I've used both DVD+R and DVD-R and although new players are proclaiming they can play both formats, I've found over the years that DVD-R are by far MUCH more compatible all around (with new and old players) than are the DVD+R format. Although the gap is closing with campatibilty with newer DVD players, DVD-R are still much more compatible with older players (before 2002)

    Hope this helps

I've heard the thereoy that DVd-R are more compatible slightly over the DVD+R due to DVD-R being out a little bit longer. I don't really think it matters anymore and a dula format DVD Burner will certainly be the best solution.

Sony has also announced a new dual format dual layer DVD Burner which will allow double the capacity w/o having to flip the disc over. Just something to consider!
