I have found that the DVD's I create and burn on my Mac G4 will not play on everyone's DVD player. This is not good for my videography business. What options do I have? Is their a reasonable solution to my predicament? What technology do the big production houses use that allow their DVD's to play on any player?

What type of DVD players are you using. Are they older or newer players. Are you using DVD-R and what brand DVD Media are you using? All the items play a factor in you DVD authoring process and the success that viewers will have.

Big productions have their discs pressed and strictly confine to the DVD standard for the maximum compatibility.

Right now, it's a matter of trial and error. Test, test, and test again! It could be your burner, what happens when you put the DVD into your computer?

I have found that most newer DVDs play both DVD-R and DVD+. I know my two do which I purchased over two years ago at Wal-Mart. They both also play VCDs.

Yes, Korak... That is an excellent site... visit

    for stats on DVD compatibility.

The most important statistic is that DVD-R's play in only 93% of DVD players currently on the market. I had a project recently where I sold 70 DVD-R's, and 5 of the customers said they couldn't play them... That's exactly what I expected with the 93% rule.

I get so frustrated when people in forums ask me "What kind of DVD-player are you using?"... The problem is NOT MY DVD-player!.. I'm selling DVD's on the retail market... if I sell 100 DVD's for one project, they will likely get put into 100 different DVD players. I can't call up every single person who bought one of my DVD's and ask them the make and model of their DVD-player.

93% is simply not good enough for my business, either. I have begun to experiment with a new format called "DVD book-type"... I purchased a benq burner (DW1620) that claims that burning in book-type is 99.4% compatible. I still don't know a lot about it, and have yet to do any tests, but if anyone knows anything about "book-type".. please let us know!

I did some more searching around at videohelp.com, and this looks quite intersting:

BitSetter looks like the ideal program for anyone facing compatibility issues.

    Also a good read:

    Finally! Something better than 93%.
