I recently bought a Panasonic GS70 MiniDV camcorder. I would like to transfer my old VHS tapes to DVD and burn DVDs. Also I would like to transfer my new digital footage to DVD discs. Can anyone advice me which is the BEST SOFTWARE available for a newbie and which is the best DVD burner under $ 250. Thanks

Ok, you should be able to plug your vhs player into your dv camera and capture through firewire. Um... as far as dvd authoring goes, I hate to disagree with the person above but that program really sucks I tried using it with premiere pro avi file and it continually would mess up on me. The only way I got it to work was encoding inside of premiere and then exporting mpg file to it. Also, I am assuming with you just getting into this stuff you don't want to spend $400 bucks for a dvd authoring program. Here's what I would suggest 1: go out and buy a firewire card for $15-30 bucks that has some sort of software with it. It won't be great but it'll get you in the door 2: buy yourself a dvd burner. Try and find a +&- model since they can burn both types. Look for a good deal and then check out the reviews on it. Personally, I think NECs are the best since they seem to have very little trouble with media not working for them. Here is a link to an NEC 2500 for $68.99 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-012&depa=0 as far as authoring goes, I'd suggest trying out demos of products before spending your hard earned cash. Hope this helps.

I shoot on D8, edit on Premiere, master back to D8 and recapture/encode to MyDVD, then burn on DVD+R. The problem is that the audio distorts at some places, specially on background music peaks. I applied compression to the audio track and lowered gain to 90%. It didn't distort anymore. Can anyone tell me what's the problem and if my fix is the correct one? Or, is there a better way to avoid saturation or correcting it? By the way, the D8 or VHS copies didn't distort. Thanks.

Of all the DVD recorders listed, which ones are the best?

I'm looking for one which does DVD-R/RW or RAM and can cut the video input into chapters or sections.

I have a Matrox card and use Adobe 5.0 for editing. I have a DVD burner and DVDit LE authoring software. My problem is that I need to encode my AVI movie into MPEG-2. Adobe 5.0 doesn't do this (unless I am doing something wrong). What is the highest quality, or best software (reasonable price) that I should get to allow me to do this so I can make video DVDs ? Thanks for your help and expertise.

There is a product that you can use called Sorenson Compression Suite. It's a great for Video Compression and provides excellent quality for Compressing AVI files to MPEG2. The cost is about $449 and it's worth every dollar? It's available for MAC and PC.

Personally, I like to use Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7.0 to edit my videos and then export them into Ulead DVD Workshop 2 for the DVD Authoring. No problems ....

I use mostly Pinnacle Studio 9 for editing and author the DVD image on the hard drive, then burn it using Nero 6.6 (it is possible to author VCDs and DVDs directly with Studio but burning fails often).

:( I have the Sony DVDirect (which was a Christmas gift) and it came with Nero 6.0 software. I have yet to get Nero working! I was able to make very short video clips (less than 3 minutes in length) but was not able to copy my own authored dvd's. Lately, Nero has even refused to run. Sony refers me to Nero, Nero refers me to Sony, and I get nowhere except frustrated. I don't have tons of money to toss around buying software. :'(

The DVDirect works great as a stand-alone product, but with the software, it sucks. It won't work with Microsoft Movie Maker (which works fine on my computer) as it is proprietary and only works with Nero..... :x
