I just got a Sony TRV950 and have had a lot of fun taping and watching my recordings on the my TV because of the great picture quality. I want to edit some of my video on my computer(P4 3.2MHz, 800MHz FSB, 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, USB 2.0, 1394 port) but when using the USB cable that came with the camera, the video is pixalated. Do I need to buy the optional i.Link DV Interface cable to get a good quality picture on my computer or am I doing something wrong with my USB cable?

Typically USB has been provided to transfer stills and compressed video shot to a memory stick while DV25 requires a firewire cable. While USB 2 is technically up to the data rate of DV I'm not aware of it being used for the purpose yet.

The weird thing is the USB cable and USB drivers came in the box with this camcorder and the firewire cable is a seperate purchase. The camcorder also has a USB Steaming sticker on the side of the camera and several pages of info in the manual, whereas, the firewire is limited to one section of a page.

Brian yes indeed get yourself the firewire cable but do yourself a favor don't spend the $80 bucks that Sony wants when you can get the same exact cable at Wal-mart or Best buy for $25 to $30 and It'll work great. I use a sony Digital8 and the transfer and picture are outstanding!

I wouldn't even pay that much when you can get them on-line for $5.00 + Shipping.

I haven't used a firewire port so I still have a question about the cable itself. Sony has two of them listed at SonyStyle.com as accessories for my camera but I am not sure which one I need. One is a 4 pin to 4 pin (part # VMC-IL4415) and the other is a 4 pin to 6 pin (part # VMC-IL4615). I assume the camcorder has 4 pins and my computer would be either 4 or 6 pins. My fireware port on my computer looks like the 6 pin. If I go to Wal-Mart or Radio Shack and get a firewire cable, are there different firewire configurations like I see at Sony's site?

    Thanks for the help.

The two cables you describe are common to firewire. The 4 pin to 4 pin will connect two camcorders, for example. A 4 pin to 6 pin connects camcorder to firewire PCI cards and proprietary cards, like my old DV Raptor. A 6 pin to 6 pin would connect an external firewire drive to a PC firewire card, or to a firewire network.

If memory serves me correctly, the USB, although it shows higher transfer rates, has problems with interupts. This isn't a problem with stills, but when the speed has to be sustained (as in transfering video files), it can't keep up. So, for the time being, firewire is the answer.

I found a similar cable (if anyone is interested). It might be more or less expensive than what has been talked about, but it's an option and the quality looks good.
