I am exporting for the first time from premiere6.5 mpeg encoder to create a dvd stream.
The timeline is just over one hour but the process is taking about 4 hrs!!
Is this normal what are the options and is there anything I should be doing other than using the presets?

    Thanks in advance

There are a many factors such as pc attributes, but rendering/encoding does take a lot of time - especially for the first render. Most of us now know to do this overnite or during the day when you're at work/school. Sitting and watching your monitor is like watching grass grow.

As Phil said, there are a number of factors involved, but my suggestion would be to output a short piece of the timeline, using the work area bar and ensuring that setting in the encoder. That way you get to see what you're making in a short time. There are few things more frustrating, when you're new to the process, than waiting four hours to discover one of (a) the file is too big for a burnable disk, or (b) the bit rate selected is too low for the action/motion sequences in the project or (c) you've output two separate files of video and audio when your authoring software will only work properly with a single multiplexed file.

Unfortunately, it takes that long no matter what software you use. My solution was to have a second computer dedicated to burning DVDs, rendering, etc. I can swap the data files between my computers, because they're both equipped with matching mobile racks. You can also render, before you go to bed, and wake up in the morning to see your work :).

BTW, David is right. Be sure of what you're encoding before you commit the four hours.

I Have just started making DVD's so Im new at this. My compony Wanted me to ship sales videos to Germany in Pal not on VHS for which we have three converter units But in DVD which I have no experance. My first attempt took 2 1/2 houres my second atempt took 30 minits for a 14min video in Pal. The original was done on roxeo software the second I used NeoDVD. Neather of these were fancy but for what it's worth NeoDVD was faster.
