conversion of formats

   how does one convert a VCD file with a DAT extension into an AVI or MPEG so that i am able to open and edit this file using video editing software . the DAT file plays perfect in Windows Media Player however i cannot open it to edit using editing software like Video Explosions. i have tried changing the extension doesnt work. can anyone help
