Control Video Quality Loss in Conversion?

I'm in the process of burning some 8mm and Digital 8 camcorder tape to the DVD MPEG-2 format. I use my D8 camcorder to convert the 8mm video and pass it (as well as the D8 footage) to my computer via FireWire. Using the MyDVD "Direct-to-DVD" mode, the video is then burned to DVD-R in "Best Quality" format. Is there more or something else I can do to improve quality" Are all A-D converters equal? I'm just not impressed with the quality of the DVD picture when I play the finished product on my computer...

The old saying garbage in = garbage out plays a role here. If yo try and play the video on your computer does it look alright? This will help to identify if the problem is the converter or the encoding process just before burning.

Definitely follow your point. My first concern isn't so much the encoding, as to what the computer starts with before it encodes it. What quality loss occurs between the point the analog 8mm video goes into my Sony D8 camcorder's A/D converter and then comes out as digital on the Firewire? Are there better stand alone A/D converters or cards I should be using vice my camcorder? Or are all converters pretty standard?

Thanks for coming up on the net!
