Every forum says that I should have some nice studio monitor speakers and an XLR type mic to get started in digital video.

However, none of these devices seems to plug directly into my PC or Mac. The Fostex monitors use either XLR or 1/4" phone inputs, and mics have either XLR or 1/4" phone plugs. Neither goes directly into a computer.

I want to use an audio editing software to get good sound, but how to I plug my mic and monitors in? Do I have to buy a mixer? Thanks.

It depends on how much you want to spend. These are the two devices that I've personally used:

They basically act as an external sound card and have built in mic preamps. The Omega is more advanced and provides more in/outputs, 4 track simultaneous recording, and phantom power. If you want to plug in studio monitors, the Omega will be the one to go with.

Or you could go a step down from the Omega and get the Lambda:
