I've been working on my first film... still stuck in preprodution. I am wanting to doit right the first time, so I am taking my time and making sure everyhting is perfect. I am working on an effect and I am about 80% done with figuring out the process of how to do the effect. take a look at it and lt me know what you think and whether or not you think it will be a good effect:

Do not worry it is a small video, less than a MB. You can also watch a Production Diary as to how I did the effect on my website. I just want some suggestiong as to how to make this look better.

What is it that you are trying to do? I looked at the video but cannot figure out what you are asking.

The sword, the blade is computer generated... sorry I guess I was not very explicite, I thought the title of the video was self explanetory, not to mention the fatc that the blade doesn't look real yet.

In that case it's quite good - I couldn't tell (well, ok my eyes aren't great and the monitor at work is not too hot either but still quite impressive).

Well that i good. obviously the goal is to get it to where. unless people are looking for it. they do not see that it is CG.

I just recieved my HDR Probe today, so that means I can now take the last step to making to look more photorealistic, something I was faking in the video.

Oh, and I am looking for critiques Let mw know what it is about the effect that makes it obvious to you.

I have made a explanation/guide as to how I achieved this effect. I recieved some questions about the process I used. So I made a guide and I am linking it here, hope this answers some questions people have.

Please not that this link contains a video clip from a movie rated PG-13, depicing a scene of violence, as this is a discussion of a visual effect depicting "killings" by a sword.

Nice job man! I've been doing alot of special effects research as well just for the sake of knowing how. Since you ask for feedback, I thought I'd mention that the blade is a bit too shiny to look real. Since this clip is just a test though I figure you know that already. But good job tracking it. Did you do that frame by frame or use a tracking feature? Adobe After Effects Pro has motion tracking that would be sweet for that kind of effect. In fact, I bet you could do the entire blade in AE using its (relatively primitive) 3D interface.

The Adobe After Effects is a little too expensive. The shinyness is part of me not using a real HDR lighting. Which I now have the stuff I need to fix that I just haven't dont it. Mnd you I have not added textures and what not it is just an envirment map, which is uber shiny.
