Well, you don't say what type of shooting you're doing, so it's really impossible to answer properly. Basically, this subject has been beat to death and if you'll utilize the Search feature of these forums for terms like "low light", etc. you'll find a ton of info.
I have a $200 Samsung Hi-8 that gets a relatively good picture in low light. I say "relatively" meaning that the quality isn't much worse than in good light. But "quality" is a subjective term and this camera gets lousy video even in good light! (Mostly because the detail is tuned way up, causing everything to have outlines).
Want an idea of the quality difference under low-light conditions between a $1200 camcorder and a $2400 (street prices) camcorder? I've posted this link twice before, so with apologies for the "rerun", here it is again:

To sum up, if you're shooting professionally (like wedding videography, etc.), then you have to pony-up the green and go for a VX2100 or PD170, etc. If just shooting for yourself, do whatever - it's your own foot you're shooting! X-D
Welcome to the forums! We hope to see you around more.
