Camcorder Question

   What are some of the differences between a professional video camera (like news station use) and a regular consumer level camcorder?  If you have good video editing software, then does it matter?  I talked to a guy who used to work at a TV station and he said the the difference was just the look of being very professional.  Thanks for any answers I can get.
