Is blacking your DV tapes necessary :-? What is the purpose? :?
Obviously a newby, and need to understand what it is I'm doing and what for.
Thanks for your time and troubles.

Blacking tapes prevents the appearance of drops, hiccups etc. during the shoot, but more important, sets the time base correctly in case it were wrong (this can happen when you put a tape in the camcorder, then eject it without having recorded anything, then you put the tape back in and record).

Blacking the tape is a good idea if you want to have a continuous timecode ie. 0:00:00 -1:00:00 with no breaks.

That's exactly what I wanted to say, but couldn't make it more simple.

The recommended number of re-records to a miniDV tape is 5, everything above that number is at your own risk anyway. But most people only record once on each tape, so why should blanking be a problem?

Here's an article about why we should not black/strip our tapes:

Well written, but I'll stick to my beliefs for now...
