Black Background?

   Hi,
   
   Quick question. I noticed a show the other night on National Geographic, during the onscreen interviews the background was a dark, rich black. It looked really nice, the only thing you focused on was the talking head.
   How did they do this? Was it in front of a green/blue screen and than key in the black?

   good lighting.
   I do it in portrature all the time.
   plain paper background roll.
   black velvet backdrops help if you can't control all the light, but they're really expensive.
