    I'm new to the 3CCD cameras. Can anybody tell me the difference between a 1/3 3CCD and a 1/6 3CCD. Basically, the Panasonic PV-DV953 has a 1/6 3CCD 800K pixels and the Canon XL1S has a 1/3 3CCD 270k pixels...

    Hi!

The 1/6 and 1/3 just means the size of each CCD in inches. Bigger should be better because it is probably higher resolution. If quality of the image is all that matters the 1/3 inch is probably better but otherwise you might want to take into account the other features of the cameras.

The smaller the chips are, the more depth of field the camera has. The more depth of field the camera has, the harder it is to make it look like broadcast tv (where everything is not always in focus). On the smaller chips EVERYTHING is in focus.

    Ron,

Of all the times this question has been asked in one form or another, nobody has thought of putting the answer in quite this manner. Brilliant! Your post is definitley a "keeper."

There's an article on CCDs in the new Videomaker that should answer your questions.
