<description>&#60;p&#62;Yeah I thought about that, we do have equipment to borrow on campus but I thought maybe buying one now would set me up for things in the future for when I have left university, &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I am not fully sure how we are creating the end product yet but I believe we have to edit the video down to 2 minutes of footage, put captions over the video, include a voice over and I also have to have a recorded interview and edit it into the overall video to make it like a real news piece. I will try and find out the software available tomorrow when I am in university. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;There are 3 cameras I have found so far, just wondered what your opinions would be on them, &#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62; Lee Stacey, the best would be free. I would check to see if there was some equipment on campus that you could borrow, maybe from the drama or some other department (the sports department might have some equipment that they use to film games or practice). I would suggest that you find a tripod to use also, this will steady your shots and give it a more professional appearance. If your team plays during daylight hours, this would give you more light to give better quality output. This is critical especially if you are using a lower end video camera. You didn't mention how you are going to produce the end product (DVD?), type of computer/software that is available for you to use. Hope this helps, some more info would give us more to work on.&#60;/p&#62;</description>

&#60;p&#62;I'm a trainee Sports Journalist at University at the moment and for part of my TV Production module I've been asked to make a Newsworthy TV Package,&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I was hoping to be able to record my local team Harrogate Town FC during a game but I don't have a camera so was just wondering what the best camera would be for recording the match and able to catch the goals that are scored in good quality. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I am willing to pay upto around £150 but may go upto £350 if pushed to my limit,&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;Other than basic maintenance (keeping it clean and properly lubricated), you have to make adjustments to your tripod when you're using it to get it to perform best as it can. Also, what model and grade of tripod you bought will be prime determinations for how well it performs. Obviously, a $20 'S-Mart' special is not going to stand-up against a Manfrotto HDV501. But, there is no reason that by setting your controls to suit how you move and practice within those limitations that you can't get decent movement out of it. Cheap tripods will take more effort that and you have to stay within the weight capacities of your tripod too.&#60;/p&#62;</description>

&#60;p&#62;Stuff like that are what 'crashcams' are good for. You could easily get a higher-end Point and Shoot with a video format similar to what your high-end camera is shooting and dangle it until the cows come home.... I've stuck them to the outside of cars, blown them up, shot at them, set them on fire you name it. Tripod tricks work ridiculously well with a camera you're not sweating it getting smoked during a shoot!&#60;/p&#62;</description>

&#60;p&#62;I had a DJ convince me once to do this with my Z5.  Scared the living daylights out of me but I did it.  Fully extended tripod and center section and the base was at chest level when held.  I ran around the edge of the dance floor and it did give some nice shot, but dangling a higher end camera in the air without holding it (only the tripod) especially over the heads of inebriated people probably is not the best idea.&#60;/p&#62;</description>

<description>&#60;p&#62;I have a  Manfrotto bought used on ebay with fluid head so no rubber band needed when I use it. I also have a consumer level tripod which has a center shaft that can be removed and becomes a monopod. I use it frequently as a 'poorman's steadicam. In fact our local botanical garden doesn't allow tripods so my monopod accompanies me there and with a little ingenuity works as steady as a tripod as well as a steadycam. Bracing the foot of the monopod against one of my feet and gripping the monopod shaft and something fixed allows a very steady base for the shot. Just pivoting the mono usually gives a pretty smooth pan. It takes a little practice for these techniques it but works pretty well and makes for light traveling. The monopod doesn't work quite as well as the tripod for the simulated dolly shot because it is difficult to keep the camcorder from rotating. Keep shooting. &#60;/p&#62;</description>

<description>&#60;p&#62; I also had that problem. I &#34;fixed&#34; it by adding a Nady DMP-2 between the mics &#38;amp; the H4n or camcorder. I must admit it adds a little circuitry hiss (an easy fix in post - well worth it) and it's output is line level only.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;It's pre-amp with 2 XLR in &#38;amp; outputs, +48V phantom power &#38;amp; powered by one 9 volt battery.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;It's small - about  4.5&#34; W  X 2.25&#34; H X 5.25&#34; D and only 1 pound. &#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;From reading other posts, it seems that this problem is common for both the AT-897 and the NTG-2... of course, the exact two mics that I invested in!  DOH!  I went over to a buddy's place, who is an audio pro, and we ran the mic first through one of his professional-grade preamps.  That did the trick!  Both mics sounded great (although the AT-897 was clearly better than the NTG-2).  So for my purposes, not wanting a huge 20 lb professional preamp to lug around on shoots, I'm going to try this little guy, the Rode Power Plug:&#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;ok I tried it connecting directly (however i have an NTG-1 not the -2) and it works fine. if I set the volume to 100, i can get -6db standing 3ft away and talking just a bit loader than normal like if you would talk to a group of 5 people at the restaurant. if i talk loader like in front of a group of 20 or so people it peaks.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;to compare it, I connected my Neumann BCM104 (i use for voice overs) and got the exact same scenario.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;the only things i set were phantom 48v and low cut at 133hz.&#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;Thanks, Earl.  I believe you are right that it is a &#34;combination of the two.&#34;  Not in the sense that there is anything wrong with either mic or Zoom on their own, but from what I've read in a few other forums is that the Zoom doesn't have enough gain in its pre amp.  So I guess one would need either a really sensitive shotgun mic, or to feed the mic into a separate pre-amp, and then the pre-amp into the Zoom.  Definitely not what I wanted to hear.  Oh well.  I appreciate your response! &#60;/p&#62;</description>

<description>&#60;p&#62;I suspect it might be a combination of the two, but first I have to say I do not have the H4 model, only a set of H2's that I absolutely love and use extensively. On them, I have, and with the configuration you're using, I have to set the levels to between 125-128 on the Zoom, to get the kind of response I want from my Nady shotgun (one sorry mic, I have to say). The ONLY way I've been able to have serious silence with little/no air or noise is to use baffles and sound abatement, quilts, blankets, etc. in conjunction with the setup. I can set the H2 outside this perimeter, but I have to run a cable from the shotgun to the recorder, and the shotgun is about 20&#34; away from me.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;My Rhode does much better, but I still prefer to be closer to the mic than 3 feet, still setting the Zoom at 125-128 and modulating carefully so as to not have moments where I might exceed the settings and hit the ceiling.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The softer levels are not a problem as I can &#34;normalize&#34; from within the Zoom, or do it in one of my audio editing programs during post.&#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;I own two shotgun mics, an AT-897 and a Rode NTG-2, and I'm having the same problem with each (which makes me think that what I'm experiencing is not a &#34;problem&#34; and is completely normal).  Here's the situation:  When I have one of the mics connected to a Zoom H4N audio recorder, I have to have the recording levels all the way up (to level 100).  With the levels all the way up, I have to be just 6-inches directly in front of the mic to be able to talk in a normal voice volume and register -12db on the Zoom (in an otherwise silent room).  If I back up to 3 feet from the front of the mic, speaking in a normal voice volume only gets me to -24db.  Now, I know you need to be as close to the mic as possible to obtain the best quality, but I would expect to be able to be at least 3ft away and not have to turn the audio recorder's levels to their max.  Because when I bring the -24db to normal levels in post, the amount of noise increases as well.  &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;My question is:  are shotgun mics supposed to be like this?  Is this an issue with the Zoom H4N?  It would seem to me that I should have more wiggle room with the Zoom's recording levels to make the mic much more sensitive.  &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Any advice would be very much appreciated.&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;kuvirkot, you might need a separate unit to power your mic. or run it through a mixer that has a phantom power switch. you'll still need to switch to Hi-Z i think and use an adapter to plug your line into the H2, if i'm not mistaken.&#60;/p&#62;</description>

<description>&#60;p&#62;I see there's a debate growing about 'H4N's vs H2's'. Like Earl implied, there's no reason to debate. With the H4N for more money, you get more features. Many of which you might not have the need for. I'm seriously looking at getting a pair but the H2's price is verrrry attractive, but the features on the H4N are what I need for what I do. It would be simple to put adapters onto an H2 (I always keep adapters just in case) so I my pride wouldn't be hurt to use Mini-to XLR adapters though they can be a pain sometimes. It really depends on both what you can afford and what you're trying to do.&#60;/p&#62;
