The morning session, Course 103: "Mastering Film Grammar," is an intensive and highly entertaining exploration of screen art form. Whether you're spending $100 million or $100, you're going to be pointing your camera at something. Instructor Tom Provost will explore the colors, shots, shapes, symbols, lines, shadows, and sounds that prompt specific emotions and make up the extremely visual and aural art that is the motion picture. Over 100 clips and screen shots from various movies will be used to illustrate and illuminate. The afternoon session, Course 204: "From Script to Screen," is a unique and revealing look at how a movie goes from the words on a page to the final motion picture. Students will read the first act of the script of Provost's new feature The Presence prior to attending and then see the finished film in class. A frank and detailed discussion of the transition will follow. From Script To Screen is a rare opportunity to dig deep into the filmmaking process. They're talking about doing other video classes/workshops in the future so it would be well worth your while to check out their site. If there's any Videomaker staff reading this, creativeLIVE is always looking for classes and workshops to present, I don't know if this is something you could work together on, or if this causes a conflict. They have hundreds of tutorials and several of Vegas. I learn Vegas Pro with an 8 hours video tutorial, a lot of patience and with the strong determination that I wanted to learn to edit videos professionally. About the workshops, why not created a "fictional workshop" like I did. I took my video camera and record me in three different angles, in the same place, and doing something different on every angle. Then I went to Vegas to make three clones of me. This was horrible, frustrating, time consuming (Weeks doing a 2.5 min video) but in the end I learn how to use Vegas. You can also go through the archives (if you have enough time) of the official Sony Vegas forums (<a href="http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/default.asp">http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/default.asp</a>). Some folks there are less than tolerant of newbies (I've been flamed before) but most are very helpful (including folks like Douglas Spotted Eagle, John Rofrano, many others). There is also Ed Troxel's forum (Ed is the author of Excalibur) - <a href="http://www.jetdv.com/vegas/forum/index.php">http://www.jetdv.com/vegas/forum/index.php</a> - Ed also has how-to newsletters on the site. As a rule, read all you can - I'd probably stay away from the YouTube based tutorials as I have found some that are just plain wrong (or more annoying than me at the very least). I missed it last time and was really bummed, so I wanted to announce it here. It's a two-day weekend seminar that teaches the craft of making a solid feature film with virtually no budget. I've taken a shorter version of the course and it was awesome. Plus, during the weekend version, there are some really accomplished filmmakers who have made successful no budget films. There are some serious discounts too, but even the regular price is way low.
