Despite this being 'Videomaker' forums and the emphasis lying so heavily on the visual element of video, unless you're purposely making silent movies Sound is an equally crucial element to your work. Plenty of emphasis on collecting good sound in the field is made in the forums, whether making a narrative or documentary project your Sound Design (or lack of it) will make or break your film. Here's a vid from the folks at Soundworks as they show us their process for creating the soundtrack for the the Sci-fi thriller "Inception".

Hello everyone. I'm new here, but I love the site and I love the forums.

I've worked in independent film for about 4 years, but mostly as a co-producer and sometimes Unit Production Manager. I'm just now getting my hands dirty with the technical stuff. I've shot weddings before and want to buy a prosumer camcorder for future weddings and short movies. The whole wedding thing kind of rules out the DSLRs that are so popular now.

I've been leaning toward Panasonic. Particularly the HPX-170. But I'm concerned with using the P2 technology. I wanted to edit via FCE 4.0 on my Macbook Pro, but I'm discovering FCE doesn't support P2.

I'm wary to try upgrading to Final Cut Studio for fear it will slow my laptop down immensely. But I also wanted the CCD sensors vs. the CMOS that Sony and Canon are putting in all their cameras now, which leaves Panasonic as my only option.

I looked at the HVX200 because it records P2 AND Mini-DV but I want a camera that records 1080p and 24p, and I feel like there is no perfect option for what I want. Here's what I want to do:

Price - $2000-$4000
XLR inputs
1080p and 24p
1/3" CCD (ideally)

Any ideas? Please help! I'm drowning in specs.

Whether working in film, video or digital media you must have a process for preparation, acquisition and processing of your imagery. Having 'workflow protocols' are the steps you take to make sure you're using the right camera for the job, have all the proper settings selected on your camera prior to shooting and that there's a clear record of what images, video or digital files came from where prior to getting them into an editing bay.

With DSLR cameras there is no exception to this rule and in fact you'll have to be more detailed and plan better than you would with a traditional video or film camera. Here's a vid by Director of Photography Shane Hurlbut, ASC as he breaks down the 'Camera Protocols' necessary for DSLR shooters. Though he shoots for high-end TV and Motion Picture projects, he has the exact same workflow issues you do or will using a DSLR for shooting video. It's definitely worth a look.

For all of you folks working with or looking to work with DSLR's for video, here's a good interview from JAG 35 with Rodney Charters the DP from the popular TV show '24'.

Gimmick or not, 3D doesn't seem to be making big gains, but it's not losing ground either. The jury is still out as to whether it will become a mainstay format or not. In the meantime, Indy filmmaker's are (as usual) finding ways to give a big budget look to their 3D films without the BB price tag. Here is a 'making of' video by Andrew Parke about the independent remake of the Zombie Classic "Night of the Living Dead 3D". The cinematographers have taken an interesting track in adapting traditional HD video cameras for 3D filmmaking. Check it out.

Hi All,

I am looking for some advice on not only organizing my project files but also making sure I have everything backed up in the most efficient manner possible. Right now I am using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, and I have two Hard-drives (500GB) and an external Hard-drive (1TB). I have had to reformat often due to Hard-drive failures and corrupt Windows OS.

I would love to know what everyone does to keep their files backed up and organized so that reformatting the Hard-drive that contains the operating system is as quick and painless as possible. How am I able to easily "re-link" assets and find projects? My situation doesn't seem that complicated, but please be as specific as possible with your response. Thank you for your time and advice!

-Orpheus

P.S. If this is in the wrong forum, sorry!

Here on the forum there is a constant stream of posters asking, "What should I do to save my videos?" Now, that's a broad question. But whether you're shooting tape or one of the varieties of 'tapeless' card-based flavors, the issue these days is archiving both for long-term but primarily in the field.

The following article "Blazing a Path in the Digital Wilderness" by Carl Mrozek covers a wide range of areas including; outdoor/wildlife, workflow in the field, storage/power issues and a lot more! Though his work is primarily with P2 based tech (this ought to make Robgrauert very happy), he does talk about XDCAM and other tapeless digital professional formats.

So how can this work for you? Granted you may not be like the featured Cinematographer Dereck Joubert and drop $750k worth of equipment in a crocodile filled river and have to go fish it out, but how he dealt with that and continued on is a great example of what today's gear is capable of.

I consider myself an intermediate novice (It is mostly a hobby for me, but I do some paid work as well), and I am struggling with how best to capture and store my footage and projects, and would appreciate others sharing their process. I do some paid work for a local organization, and I do some volunteer work at the local school selling DVDs as a fundraiser, and I edit my own personal family footage. My Current workflow is as follows:

Footage is captured on Mini DV Tapes.

I Digitize the footage and store on an external Hard Drive connected to my PC Via ESATA. This drive is essentially a dock so I can "eject" the disk when it is full and place it on a shelf for archival purposes (http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?C=1346&ID=1731)

I save my data in folders organized by "client" (Family, School, corporation), and then by Project (Holidays 2009, Christmas Pageant 2008 etc), and all of the footage and final projects are saved in that folder. When I complete a project, I burn it to DVD, and I will usually keep a copy for myself incase another master copy is neede by my client.

Unless it is priceless footage (Birth of my child, or some one in a lifetime event) I will often times reuse the MiniDV tapes again for another project, partially for cost, but mostly because I have no place to store hundreds of DV tapes, and and saving a 1 hour DV tape for 5 minutes of highlight footage of an elementary school soccer game does not seem worth it.

Do you Copy all of your raw footage and edited footage and final project off to another storage media?

Do you keep your initial raw footage, or fo you only keep the files used in the finished projects?

What sort of storage device do you used to store your projects? Network attached storage, a media server or Drobo seem like they would be good, but it places a huge strain on my homenetwork to be transfering 10-15 Gigs of data between my locally connected drive and my networked storage or USB connected Drobo (Although the new Drobo S looks interesting)

Any other advice on workflow and long term storage of footage and finished products?

Hello to all .

This is my first post found this site and is a very good one that have a lot of info on it.

So I started working in the area and I´m facing a lot of question . I´m a freelancer , so money is a importante factor in the next questions.

My machine

Phenom X4 965 - 4 * 3,40 Ghz

8 Gb Ram - 1600 mhz

Nvidia Quadro Fx 3800 ( 1 Gb Gpu, and a lot of other features)

Windows 7

My work is focus in Tv comercials.

1- (HDTv , Broadcast Monitor, way to view the work looking for troubles)

I use adobe workflow in my projects (Premier, After effects, etc) , first of all , I need a screen to test for flickers and color correction problems. Can I buy any Hd Tv and in premier, output to him and see the problems or do I need anything else ? And If I only need a Hd tv, can you suggest some models that are not that big or expensive that I can have in my desk?

2- (Best codecs to use in my workflow, or plug in that I may get that improve image quality of the renders)

At this moment we use a DV Cam that record Pal , and then they give me the footage uncompressed, or they use canopus codec , before thet give it to me. Then I normaly work on that footage and then export it to mpg2 using a preset that is the Dv Pal high quality in Premier with some changes, but I see that the picture loose a lot of quality in that process. How can I improve, and what is the best codec I can use. To export to Pal tv .

Note: I have que adobe media encoder and Sorenson Squeeze

3- (Dvd footage , using it on Premier )

Sometimes I receve DVD that I need to take the footage and use it, but the problem is that it comes in Vob files and Premier doesnt read that files, so I need to convert them, what is the best way of doing it, and the best sofware to do it or the best way to work around this problem ??

4 - (Footage in diverse formats)

That question is a problem that I´m facing , I receved some Dvd of a company and some are 720p (16:9 ; 1024*720, )) and others regular Pal (4:3, 756*576), and of course they have diferent aspect ratio 1,44 and other 1,09. My final output need to be pal, what is the best way , program, solution , I can use to solve this problem?

5- (Improving Workflow)

I´m always looking for ways of improving my productivity and image quality of my works, so if you can suggest any software , plug in , codecs, Hardware, I can use that will improve I will be thankfull.

I've used Premiere for years and have now graduated up to Adobe Production CS4 Suite. I'm not a novice but maybe not up to being called "intermediate."

Here's my problem: I'm having a hard time understanding the flow and interaction between Premiere and After Effects. I've googled it and found everything from, "I edit in Premiere and just do titles in AE" to "I edit completely in AE."

I've edited a short video together and then right clicked the clips and selected "Replace with AE Composition" to add some green screen keying and that sort of works, but then it seems to lose information or not save properly... and I'm now officially confused.

In general, I'm wondering what process do you out there that use both apps use? Do you edit completely in Premiere, use the Replace with AE Composition? Or do you set up the clips first in AE, then dynamically link them into Premiere assets to be added to a sequence?

Thanks! - Laurie

I want to put together a sweet little editing/voiceover/podcasting suite in my home. I won't say money is no object, but I'm not a pauper either.

I'm going FCP on the Mac, so that is out of the way. I am also going a tapeless Panasonic workflow. My main target is documentary/corporate and high end web promos.

What I really want to hear more about is opinions on studio audio & video monitors, input/output boards, and mixers for the Mac.

I plan on doing some podcast work, and want to record straight into my Mac. Do you guys use USB/Firewire mic interfaces? A digital mixer? And what kind of mics? I'm looking at either an EV RE20 or Shure SM7.

And any furniture suggestions would help too.

I have purchased a new Sony PMW-EX1 and I am editing on Premier Pro CS3 (mac). Premier won't work with the MP4 files that the EX1 generates.  Does anyone know a way around this. I have found two third-party software solutions (Cineform and Mainconcept) but both are pretty expensive, for that much money I would rather just buy FCP. Any other solutions?
