Dear responders, my issues are as follows; and I hope to generate simple and to the point answers that are unbiased, practical, and most importantly current.

I need to select a camera for wedding/event videography. My budget is at around 5000 dollars. It would be great if I could buy a package that would allow me to provide superior quality through my investment in equipment and at the same time remain current. (I dont for my personal reasons want to involve DSLR as my primary videocamera)

I think everyone within the wedding/event videography business understands the issues that may be of concern in this business; furthermore a main issue that i have encountered is the chasm between the 10 +experienced guys and the less than 10 years videographers who have the dv vs no dv issue? FOr instance get the HVR-7zu that does hybrid recording or go with something fresher that is strictly memory based (is their risk or not when taping someones "DAY"? thanks for your humble and to the point opinions.

I've only done a few weddings so far, and after every shoot, I ask the folks if they thought camera lights (during the dark scenes) would be distractive.... and they have all said they would rather have the lights to get a good video than no lights. What is the opinion of other wedding videographers -- camera lights on or off??

I am new to videography, but I am about to embark on a career in it.

I have not had to do this yet, but as I get more into event recording I am sure I will have to deliver HD video. It seems to me that burning Blu-Ray is very expensive. I have seen videographers put the files on Flash Drives and deliver them that way, I wanted to know how people in this forum are delivering finished HD content to clients, and what one would charge.

I run a low budget wedding video business, and usually i rely on either a tape out of the church's mixer onto a cd or my built in mics to create a decent sound. What kind of mics under $100 could I buy to put on either one of my 2-camera wedding ceremony setup. Is stereo good to have?

Hello, I'm rather new to videography as a business and am currently saving up from some gear via photography and renting video equipment.. I just recently found a group of film makers who use only dslr as video cameras which is a nice option because it's multi use and you get the nice DoF..

So here is my question, I mainly do wedding and party videography and was wondering if the traditional 3ccd prosumer is the best option or would a dslr rig be any good for weddings?

I mean does it really just come down to preference or are there some strong advantages for not using a dslr for this type of shooting?

my experiences, I have an nx5 as my primary and a small sony HD handheld. I was looking for another smaller cam to shoot b cam with the nx5. I received it on a tuesday and had a wedding that saturday..I learned all the basic controls and off we went...first hitch...no neutral density filter..ok, I'll set the shutter control up as a quick button as this was an outdoor wedding and the f stop only goes to 9 i believe?. The focus was set on auto and responded very nice and predictable. The active steady shot is very nice feature also. But...my issues came during the pre ceremony shooting and during the ceremony shooting. I was going back and forth from inside to outside sun and every trip I would have to stop open the viewfinder door hit menu, scroll for a control, hit exit, close the door as I use the eye piece mostly. It became very labor intensive..Had I not had a good feel for this venue and many weddings under my belt this shoot would have been a nightmare. I really wanted to like this camera because its very light and works great on a mono pod But, It had to go back to its creator. I will save up the extra $1000. and purchase a second nx5. I am not bashing this camera as it has some very nice features but it is not for me. The water tight doors and crevices are hard to open when in a rush if you dont have finger nails and I do very few weddings in the rain. I do like the wide lens for close shooting. I also experienced a lot of haze in the viewfinder when shooting in bright sun? I would like to hear other peoples experiences with this camera?

So I will be new to wedding videography. I'd like to call what I'm going to do, wedding cinematography. My question is as follows: In you experience as a wedding videographer which up-to-date camera would you recommend to make the possibilities for an event timeless, and capabilities and editing potentials jaw dropping. Because I do believe that the original quality of the video captures is significant, along with what media it is recorded on in conjunction with its ease of post production use and time consumption. Camera versatility is also a concern.

The cameras I'm currently looking at are the following please provide suggestions in these areas or freely from your experience. Sony HVR-Z7E, Sony PMW-EX3, Canon XLH1Sa.

Thanks for all your information in advance.

I'm trying to break into wedding and special event videography. I'm graduating high school next month and I would love to shoot a couple of weddings over the summer before I start college. I plan to major in business administration.

I have already shot my cousin's wedding two month's ago and everybody loved it. I shot it with a SONY DSR-2100 DV camcorder and edited it with Adobe Premiere Elements version 7. I burned the video to DVD on my Dell Win7 desktop pc. Everybody tells me that I have what it takes to start a home based video business and work myself through school.

For all the experienced wedding videographers out there, what advice would you give an aspiring event videographer? Is there any good books or reference material geared for an 18 year old like me? Although I have shot a wedding, most of my experience is covering school projects and my own families special occasions. How can I market myself and get my first paying gig?

After getting laid off from work last year, I got the courage to start shooting wedding videos professionally. I have been shooting videos as a hobby all my life but I never knew how I could generate income with it.

I just found a great reference that coaches you on everything you need to get started in videotaping weddings and other special events. Its available as a Kindle ebook.

http://www.amazon.com/Photography-Videography-Business-Shoestring-ebook/dp/B004OA6EUM/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

I used the book's sample advertising and advertised in my local Sunday paper and after one month, I got 3 bookings.

I'm trying to follow the advice of an ebook "Start Up A Photography or Videography Business On A Shoestring".

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004OA6EUM

The advice is that for covering weddings and other events, the camcorder should have in-camera edits. The in-camera editing features should help minimize post production editing.

The authors recommend the Sony DSR-250 which has a fade-to-black, various wipe transitions, and a digital dissolve. Since this camcorder is standard definition, is there another camcorder with the same or similar in-camera editing features, but in HD?

Thanks, Sam

I got a wedding on saturday for a friend, first one i will ever do, and it might become more of a business than a hobby with the word of mouth going around. When i plan on doing interviews, i want the person to be able to talk into my sm58 for clear and crisp audio. My camcorder (Canon hf m30) has a 1/8" mic input. So questions...

If i get a 1/8" M to xlr F cable, does it matter if the 1/8 is in stereo or mono. I've read people complain of hissing and such.

Is there gonna be an impedence mismatch, i realize the mic is Low-z, but can the camera do Hi and Low z?

Where can i buy this?

i shot a wedding and edited on Pinnacle STudio 14 and authored on vegas dvd architect and was all ready to send the finished product when i noticed that at the transition point on every clip there is a noticeable blip of static in the audio. when i open the project and play the timeline it is perfect but as soon as i render it the static returns, i have rendered twice with the same result. i'm not sure if this is why, but i had a problem the first time i rendered it where the audio was distorting and i realized the audio levels were set too high, but when i went to change it i discovered that my original project files were gone, i have no idea why or how (a whole other question), but all i had was the rendered file with dodgy audio, so i imported that and muted the audio then laid the soundtrack on the timeline again. like i said, it plays great on the timeline, but once rendered the static returns and i cannot give this to my clients and i am freaking out a little cos i'm running out of time.

PLEASE can anyone help me?

I have just done my first paid wedding using a sony hvr z1, however because i only used the onboard mic the audio was terrible. having a knowledge of photography, i was fine with the visual side of things but i really have no knowledge of audio and i can't seem to find any information for an audio newbie like me. i have another wedding in 2 weeks and i have the option of using a wireless lav, but to be honest i'm terrified of losing audio altogether or only picking up the bride and/or groom and not the celebrant etc. also, i am a single operator so i need an audio method that is simple and mobile enough for me to use on my own. any suggestions? (and don't say 'stills')

I was editing a wedding video and noticed quite a few issues. One of which was the distraction of the videographer running around the event. A lot of spent footage of shots of the floor and they were moving to get the next shot.

Do we have any wedding videographer that have tried a multiple stationary camera setup like I created on my link? The only mobile camera would be the one in the rear that would slide down the side isles if needed.

I believe the day is for the bride and any distractions would take-away from the event. Plus it would make my editing so much quicker (easier).

http://www.tacsupport.com/WeddingSetup.jpg

I inserted a link instead of the picture because I didn't want to use up excessive thread realestate. If you prefer, I can post the picture.

Take Care,

I am shooting a wedding for a friend this weekend (I swore I would never do a wedding...). Any tips on capturing the sound? The wedding is at an outdoor "wedding venue" place. I have a Zoom H4n I can put some where, but where? I assume if they use a podium I can hide it there to pick up the official, bride and groom...but if no podium? Any suggestions? Rehearsel is tonight but I would rather get some inputs from you guys here as I read some good stuff here all the time.

I am a wedding videographer and am looking at purchasing either a Glidecam HD-2000 or 2000 pro. There is a $200 price difference between the two, so I'm trying to figure out why the HD series is so much more expensive (if it's worth it). Also, does anyone know how often upgrades to this series are released? I don't want to buy the HD if they're going to upgrade in April.

Trying to get some good audio on board, but not exactly sure how to do so. I have a shotgun mic for the hot shoe and although I don't own a camera yet, I was looking to purchase the the Canon XH A1s which has two XLR inputs. The shot gun mic plugs into one and the other, I think would be a lav mic reciver hooked to my outboard mixer. One output of mixer going to Hard disk recorder and one mixer output being sent back to the camera with a wireless transmitter. Is there some kind of bodypack "reciever" I could wear that has a cord to run up to the other XLR input on the camera? If that were the case, my headphones plugged into the camera should work fine, pending there are no latency issues with the wireless signal. Am I missing something? Is there an easier way to get complete mobility and perfect audio?

Whether you shoot video or film, tape or digital what would it take to shoot then edit a video of an event and deliver it the same day?

I've done it a couple of times and plan to do it for an upcoming job. I can best describe it as 'not fun but fun'. Not fun because of the tremendous stress and precise time management issues but fun when it all works out. Steve Weiss and the latest panel of 'Filmfellas' discuss this very topic from the prospective of high-end wedding filmmakers. Much of what they talk about applies to the journeyman wedding videographer and can be applied to your own projects.

Watch the video and let me know your thoughts and experiences on this topic.

I am in the beginning phases of opening a Video Production business. I figure I will being with wedding videos since the I should be able to book few regardless of my experience. After establishing a portfolio and having my card floating around the area, I plan on moving along and expanding to other areas of the business. I have been reading a lot but really am interested in what you all have to say. Here are my questions:

a) Should I being renting equipment until I make enough $ to buy my own, or should I go in debt immediatly?

b) What equipment is ESSENTIAL when beginning? (note: I am just starting, but I have no intentions of creating anything less than great).

c) What is the best first step(s) in breaking into the local wedding video business in my area?

Those are some of the more important questions I have right now. I am going to try and get as much experience with other companies by just helping out right now, but market research has dominated my interest. I also understand how important good picture quality is, but I do believe that having an eye for photography can go a long way. Not having the best camera won't help my quest, but I do not believe that it will keep my company from creating good things. Thank you all!

I've shot weddings as a photographer both in an official capacity and as a freelancer. I personally try to avoid doing weddings as a videographer because the majority of potential clients don't understand that my services come with a level of quality of look and content they must be prepared to pay for.

Now that the wedding video industry has started to mature, the artistic and professional quality has grown exponentially from 'Uncle Joe' and his hand held camera to Digital Cinematography.

So with that in mind, if you are looking to get into wedding video work or already making a living at it you should ask yourself; what's the next level and how far is my current work from it? Whether you are already asking yourself these questions or scratching your heads, check out the latest discussion on the topic from the latest panel of Steve Zacuto's 'Film Fellas'

by Castanet Staff - Story: 48791
Aug 11, 2009 / 1:00 pm
http://castanet.net/edition/news-story-48791-101-.htm#48791

All he wants is his tapes back.

PRW Productions, a home based video business on Jokmar Court in West Kelowna, was broken into Tuesday morning.

Along with about $10,000 worth of video cameras and equipment, owner Patrick Wielders says thieves also stole DV tapes from a wedding he had recently videoed.
"I would like to appeal to whomever stole these items to return the DV tapes that were in the large black case and in one of the cameras," says Wielders.

"This footage is not replaceable."
Wielders says thieves were able to get in through the garage at about 4 a.m. Tuesday morning.
He asks anyone with information concerning the robbery to contact RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
