There is good advice already being provided here, I'd like to just add a couple resources that you may already be familiar with.

http://www.videomaker.com/article/14564/ - Here is an article on the 180 degree rule, which is quite applicable for your dialogue scenes

http://www.videomaker.com/learn/production/cinematography/camera-angles/ - this link is a click or two away from plenty of reading on angles

and try checking out some video examples with this video on angles - http://www.videomaker.com/video/watch/tips-and-tricks/531/camera-shots-and-tricks/

+1 for The Five C's- it is an invaluable resource. Also, you probably already know this, but storyboarding can help you with ideas before you are on set, so if, for example, you know that you want an establishing shot of your environment, a master of your cast interacting and which close-ups you plan to use, you can plan your coverage to match the natural light most closely (continuity can be a pain when shooting outdoors).

Also, you will probably need to supplement the light around, so don't forget some bounce boards (even foam core is fine for this) and some reflectors. Remember to white balance your camera to the environment.

Finally, sound is a major factor- no matter how 'pro' something may look, folks will generally give more of a chance to anything with good sound capture.

Hey guys,

This is my first post on here so bear with me. I hear doing forums is always a good way to get advice and answers on topics, so here goes:

My wife and a friend of ours have started a new web series to be posted on video sites such as youtube, etc. We have experience with acting having worked on real movie sets, as well as script writing (which is what I went to school for), but none of us have any real experience with filming itself. My question is, to make the movie come out as professional as possible, what are some camera angles/transitions, etc. to use to get the right effect? Or rather, the most efficient effect?

The movie contains zombies and will be fast paced. We are filming in the woods and most of the footage will be during the day. The first couple of episodes are background, so its mostly discussion between two characters. I just don't want to shoot the film from one angle the entire time and thus make it boring. Any advice?

You both are correct. The URL doesn't allow you to link from You Tube, but it does if you send someone a disk and they play it. It is kind of deceiving though.

From the Vegas 9 Manual it appears you can add a URL to streaming video that is being played on Windows Media Player and/or RealMedia so that when the video gets to that point. it sends instructions to the users internet browser to change the content being displayed. So it appears limited to streaming through these players.

Yeah, I think if you pay for a "Promotoed Video" you can end up with more account control and that may allow you to link to off-site url's.

As for that insert command, I googled around and found one post on some forum that suggested you could embed a command that would load a web site from a video. I've never seen that done, and can't imagine an application for it, but that's not to say it's not something that can be done. It suggested it worked during playback on your computer but not youtube. I do not know. If you find out please post it here (I'd like to know, too.)

I found out..or I think I found out..that You Tube allows links to be posted on Annonations with an outside link if you upgrade your account. However, you have to have so many hits before they let you upgrade. I read all of this on comments so I am not sure how much of this is true.

I guess I have been seeing links and not realizing that they are just relinking you to another you tube video.

I really appreciate your help.

What then is that Command Insertion for in Sony Vegas? I am at a loss on that. I sent Sony a email a couple of days ago and they haven't replied.

oc6088, I think what you're seeing is the creator of the video putting a graphic, link, word, etc., in his video and then uploading it to Youtube, and then using Youtube's interface that PJ McConnell describes to make the graphic, link, or word function like a hyperlink within Youtube.

If you look at the end of freddiew's or mysterguitarman's videos, for example, you'll always see this done. usually it's a link to their own stuff on youtube. if you watched the video before it was uploaded (i.e., on their personal computers) you'd still see the links at the end but they wouldn't function as a hyperlink. That's added after the video is uploaded.

if this isn't what you're referring to, can you post a link to an example? maybe there's some new thing I'm missing--I'd love to stay on top of it!

Thank you for the answer, not really the one I wanted, but at least I know now! What then is the purpose of the command marker that says URL?

I believe I have seen other videos on You Tube (and you are correct as of now Annotations doesn't allow links to sites outside of You Tube) that allow links embedded in the video. Are they using a different software?

What you are looking for is in the YouTube player itself using flash. There is no way at all to render a video to lead you to a url at a certain time. What you will most likely want to do is just add the base of the URL or some sort of text describing where the link is going to lead you to as simple text within your video. Then after uploading it to YouTube you can find the option to add annotations to your video in which you can add an interactive link.

As of right now I don't think YouTube will let you link to other webpages other than YouTube ones, so if you want the link to go to a URL that's not on youtube, you will have to direct your viewers to the description box.

How do you make a video for You Tube and have it so there is a live link in the video itself?

I tried hitting insert command then..
Command: URL
Parameter; I put in the website
Comment: I left blank

I rendered it as WMV and uploaded it on you tube and it doesn't seem to be working. Does it need to be rendered differently?

Also it seems like this only sets it for one second were the command marker is. Is there a way to set it up for 5-10 seconds?

I wish I could be a little more specific, but apparently, this is the only way I get responses. It's about web players in specification to their formats, so I could have just titled it "mac vs. pc" (which is what I'm going to try next time). I am unable to save WMV files in Vegas Pro without getting a dropout, so all of my luck seems to be going H.264.

I can watch H.264 files through web pages on my PC through Explorer 8, but am unable to make them buffer when watching online. NO MESSAGE... JUST A WAIT OF TWO HOURS IN ORDER TO GET THE QUICKTIME LOGO TO DISAPPEAR AND PLAY. Bottom line IS THAT IT WON'T STREAM AT ALL - just a strenuous download. How do I get the h.264 video online embedded (or configure QuickTime) where it is actually able to stream? This is not intended to be a 55-hour discussion, or comment that gets nothing at all. I just want an answer.

Hi,

I use a web-based application called Elluminate to hold meetings online. This software allows for six simultaneous audio and video feeds so participants use webcams and headsets to see and talk to each other.

I'm interested in using this software to hold live online coferences/presentations as well but would like to use a camcorder at the back of the room to provide the video feed rather than a webcam.

My question is what do I need in terms of camcorder to do this?

I've been looking at the Panasonic HDC-TM700 and the Sony CX116 HD cameras and wondering whether these would do. Do HD cameras live stream over USB 2.0 connections? Is a IEEE1394(Firewire) connection needed? Would my camera need an audio in or is the on-board mic good enough to pick up someone presenting at the front of a small room from the back?

Any help is much appreciated. Best wishes.

Over hundreds (if not thousands) of online storage solutions are available, though you'll always be limited to the download speed of your ISP along with the transfer speed of the website storage solution servers.

First of all, sorry if my english ins´t great...but i beleive is not so bad either and i will try to explain my problem as best as i can.

Ok, this is something i feel is becoming really important for websites all over the world investing on video news reporting and i (strangelly enough) can´t find any good info about it. So, if someone could help me out i would really be thankfull.

About a year and a half i started a project of video news reporting for a newspaper website. My professional background was in video for TV (i worked as producer and director on a tv news department) and i started only then learning about this wonderfull world of web video.

Usually we make video reports and then bring them in house (on SD Cards) for editing and publishing but lately i´ve been thinking on having the camera operators send me a few clips directly from the reporting site to our offices for almost imeddiate publishing. But what´s the best way to do it?

I want to be able to receive at least decent quality clips so i could do further editing in house so i can´t ask them to send me 320X240 clips. And good quality files are heavy to send over internet and take a large amount of time.

So, does anyone had the same kind of problems? What solutions are available? What´s the best software for conversion (quality/speed)? All ideas on this subjects are important for me and i believe for many other fellow videomakers in your foruns. Thanks for your help.

"Also, I think this could be it's own industry too. Before the iPad was

Yeah it's plain to see that once print outfits recognize that this is the avenue that will keep their industry alive, they're going to need professionals who are experienced in production, compositing and interactive design to make the visual elements they'll regularly need. I just hope like one of the VIV mag's creator's said that, "This was not motion for motion's sake, this is still print in spirit...." If those outfits who go into this area keep that in mind, 'Motion Magazines', etc. will be very distinct from traditional Motion Picture products.

I don't really think the iPad has 'revolutionized' anything. The tech is actually 'old' (in tech years) and isn't any real improvement over the iPhone Touch except for the larger viewing area and some more drive space (64GB fixed hard drive? Come on!) However, as always I will give Apple it's props for it's 'Hype Machine' and how that does move people into creating stuff to support their products.

But this thing is going to be bigger than anything Apple planned on cornering the market on. This kind of production will work on mobile devices, netbooks and other tablet devices too. With Adobe making Flash available for all of these devices, there will be plenty of work to go around!

Neil,

You definitely don't want to 'chase technology'. However as you said about making the transition to HD, 'eventually you'll have to wave goodbye to your old gear'. I do still have my SD rigs as they still produce a fine image (I've still got my old Hi-8 rig on active duty!) You never know when you'll need an 'offbeat' look to put in with your HD footage. They can be used like the old days when TV shows shot entirely on film to represent 'the real world' and incorporate video footage to show television.

I'm like you as I hang back a bit to wait for the 'bugs' to get worked out, manuals to be written and for realistic workflows to develop. I have to admit though, I will be scraping up some cash to upgrade from CS3 to 5. I always skip an update with Adobe. I learned way back when not to run out and buy every time they come out with an update (x.0, x.5, x.0). That get's way too expensive.

Rob,

Thanks for the info on Zbrush, looks like it is actually not a sky-high priced package. I'm still working with basic compositing and effects tools and building all the animated models the old fashioned way, with cardboard and glue.

I also like seeing the kind of move the "magazine" is taking and getting the use out of a new tech like the iPad. Rather than see print die, I'd love to see it adapt and evolve.

Composite,

I tend to stay about a generation back on hardware and pick up deals while everyone is boarding the "latest & greatest express", the only time I forced myself to keep up was when I made the jump to HD, it was a sad day waving goodbye to my little family of Canon SD cams. I swear they were crying, but it could have been moisture on the UV lens

Neil,

I believe the one guy said they're using Zbrush, which is a pretty cool program. When I was in college, they had it loaded on all the computers, so I got to screw around with it for a bit. I never took a class for it though since it was for the 3D Animation majors.

Also, I think this could be it's own industry too. Before the iPad was released, everyone was predicting that it will revolutionize the print industry. Obviously this isn't print, but magazines and newspapers now have a new medium for delivering their content.

Neil,

I can easily see how this could be a whole industry unto itself like 'wedding videography' is. And, there are more than enough tools out there right now that you can do a bang up job with and not put yourself in the poorhouse trying.

Some of the new stuff coming along is just amazing. I'm glad to see Epics getting out there and being used.

I couldn't catch what the software was that they are using to make all the background scenery and furniture, I'm guessing it's some high end proware, but how long before stuff like that filters down to the rest of us?

Can't wait!

After watching Adobe's launch of CS5, trying to drown out all the 'buzz' about the 'iPad', 'Droid' and a bunch of other new whiz-bang products getting flung at us everyday, I saw this video about 'Motion Magazine Production'. The all Digital Magazine 'VIV' recently shot their issues' cover and a layout feature completely for the motion mag format. The production shot using live actors, props, and greenscreen with the RED EPIC. Though their project was primarily for the 'i' line of Apple products, I can fully see the potential for this type of work for other devices as well. Take a look at what was done. Though VIV had money to throw at the project, you could with your existing gear produce similar styled content with high production values.

Some video editors allow you to choose the specs (video rate, audio rate, etc.) for the specified video format which you decide to save your video.

For Flash video, you should do some research for software that embeds video into SWF (Shockwave Flash Object) formats or software that will convert your video to FLV.

I guess I didn't really clarify what I was asking. I'm wanting to stream video over the internet off of my server and encode them myself. I'm wanting a datarate no higher than 1200Kbps and my embedded resolution is 640x360. I want to stick with a flash format (MP4, FLV, F4V, etc.) because they are the most universal formats.

Do I need to encode the videos to 640x360 or use a larger resolution for my source and shrink it with my embed code? (I think that's what Facebook is doing). And what suggestions for very good quality from HD-sourced video do you have for encoding them for streaming?

I've had good experience using AVC MPEG-4 for compact high quality video (other than most players don't support it). I've heard of AVCHD, which my editing software supports. AVC-HD is probably something similar to AVC MP4, only the fact that it encodes in High-Definition.

If AVC (Advanced Video Codec) is not an option, I would recommend trying WMV, which I also had good experience with.
