David: I just looked at that head, I wonder if it will fit my Ravelli tripod. What would I have to measure or check to see if this head will fit. For some reason the head on my Ravelli has never paned correctly.

I am starting a documentary in the next month and am looking into purchasing this or a Canon Vixia Model. I am on a budget, but I can afford about $600 on the camcorder. I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on this camera for the type of work, interviews and such, as I will require a mic for it.

I'll probably be running Sony Vegas for the Editing software.

Another consideration - XA10 is limited to a 24Mbps maximum bitrate and 4:2:0 color sampling instead of the 50Mbps and 4:2:2 sampling... I believe the XH-A1 has the 4:2:2 color sampling.

I know that my post may be late but based on your budget, and what you are shooting, I'd say it's between the XHA1s and the XA-10. The HF-G10 is totally out of the equation. This doesn't mean that it's a bad camera. In fact it's an awesome camera but, for what you get with the XA-10, it doesn't make sense to pass on all of the upgrades. If you're close up, the XHA1s can't even compare to the quality that you'll get from either the HF-G10 or the XA-10. I would imagine that you'll find this to be the same when further back despite the larger sensor in the XHA1s. It's old technology. I have one and I love it but, I can't discard the superiority of the HF-G10 and the XA-10. If you're just starting out and want a more professional looking set up, go with the XHA1s and you should be able to get a manfrotto tripod with a fluid head, a mic and well you'll have to pass on the lights for now. If you're in the recording industry as statedm you can't go wrong with either of the two that I suggested. If you can get both, I might actually consider it as an option. It's just tough to pass on all of the manual features on the XHA1s. If shot properly, you'll get some really good footage.

Pablo - I recommend the $1229 HF G10 and a $284 Tascam. Right now, the G10 is $971 less than the $2199 XA10 at Amazon. Syncing audio in the edit is worth the money you'll save.

If you need to wow your clients, get a fancy shoulder rig/matte box/follow focus like this one for $289 from Amazon and you'll still be almost $400 ahead :-)

Picking a camera is never easy. Everyone has their own special needs and considerations, and everyone has their own opinions.

So... this is just my opinion, for better or worse.

First, the manual controls on the XH-A1 are nice and you may find the menu controls on the other two cameras frustrating at times.

However, if a client is demanding the highest resolution possible, HDV isn't going to cut it.

On a similar note, the lack of audio input on the HF-G10 could be a frustration - especially in the edit. True - external audio recorders can get great audio, but for event and industrial purposes I suspect the audio on the XA-10 will be sufficient.

Personally, the XA-10 is at the top of my list for my next camera.

But that's just my opinion. :-)

Hi. I am having a hard time deciding!

I do live event recording and industrial video, and I am on a limited budget (max $2,000). Now I have a Sony HVR-A1 (the little "pro" HDV camera from SONY) which does a nice job for my purposes.

I want to upgrade and don't know if better to buy a used XH-A1 (HDV, of course) or a new XA-10/Vixia HF-G10.

The XA-10/Vixia HF-G10 clearly is the future, problably is a much better long term investment, but for pro work I find it quite small (event smaller than my current HVR-A1). For personal use seems great but from the customer point of view they lack that "oh what a camera" selling factor.

The XH-A1 is great in handling, manual controls, etc. but HDV is clearly fading away. I don't know if the better lens (and probably electonics) of the A1 compesate the full HD quality of the XA-10/HF-G10.

To make things more difficult, the price of the HF-G10 is very competitive v. the XA-10, almost $500 less in Amazon. Really don't know if it worth the handle/XLRs. For that money I can get a Roland/Tascam audio recorder, that has much more recording quality and versality.

Please help me!

Greetings, everyone! I have a question regarding my Canon VIXIA HG20 camera and a buffer overflow error that has been causing problems for me.

Here's the situation I was doing a photo shoot of an F8F Bearcat from a B-25 Mitchell with all its windows removed in the back, creating a pretty bumpy environment. I wanted to supplement my pictures with video, but the HG20 would only record about 10 seconds of video at a time, before stopping due to a buffer overflow error. I've read a bit about it and found this may be due to the (Buffer Overflow error) vibrations in this environment.

The real question now is, if I set it to record video to the SD card, will this eliminate the problem, or am I just SOL?

Thank you for any input!

I actually enjoyed watching The Gator & the Grasshopper Mark. Great sequences and footage. My only comment would be to have ended it shortly after the crossing, as the rest seemed a bit long or even anticlimactic. Enjoyed the credits treatments though, so glad I watched it all the way. I do understand the "journey" and transition from its beginning and on to the sunset. Bet you had a lot of fun shooting and editing. Good music accompaniment.

Hi Greg:

The tripod is one of those must-haves. Once you get used to it, there is no going back whatsoever. It makes video clean and professional. The trick is in the tripod head and a steady frame below. I use a Manfrotto 501 head (sometimes called Bogen) and solid Manfrotto sticks. Do NOT go lightweight. You will get camera shake. it is smooth as silk, light enough to take on a 2 hour hike (but I am a big guy too!) well respected. Costs under $200 on ebay new.

I would buy another in a heartbeat. You can easily spend $3,000 on tripods - O Conner - but I think that is out of your league. This will work well.

Hi and thanks for the reply. I was just looking it over. The reviews are very mixed so I will ask you. Some of the reviews state that the tripod "sticks" on panning. I think what they might be referring to is what my Ravilli is doing, at the start of a pan it "sticks" and then after that the rest of the pan is ok. So catching the bride and the first second of the pan is a jerk. The other thing that was most common on the reviews was the quick release nut being too close to the camera mount to tighten.

In your experience have you noticed these two items?

The dolly is an awesome + if the pan thing is just run of the mill complaints.

I have been using the Davis and Sanford Provista 7518 w/FM18 Head for well over a year now and have found it to be an increadible value. Very smooth. Right now B & H has it listed for $189 with free shipping and they are throwing in a 3 wheel dolly. It also includes the case and it arrived with a second camera plate.

I also use this to support my small backpacker camera crane.

I'm sure others will give you there opinion and you can spend more but for the price I don't think you can beat the quality of this support.

Hello all; Long time no post. I have had a life changeover so to speak. My parents at law are aging and along with that comes changes with all lives that are in orbit.

Anyway my 22nd anniversary is up and coming (I am getting the wife her first "real" camera. It seems I have peaked her interest.) Anyway she asked what I wanted and I need a tripod replacement. I currently use a Ravelli AVT, but I have had to have done something serious to it in the last two years because the pan is rough now. I have disassembled it and put lithium grease in the internal, it did help but is sticks really bad.

So when the wife asked me what I wanted a tripod came to mind. However I need to keep the budget real, under $300.00 with tax, but I do not want something so-and-so looks up and reads the reviews, I have come to trust many here at their "real experience" word. So based on what you use and have experience with what do you suggest? I am using a Canon Vixia HF21 and when I shoot in 24FPS I need this thing to be smooth as silk. It is a heavier camera as it has an aluminum body, but it is still light.

So suggest and post links away. I would like to buy it through B&H if I can (Account there).

So there it is.

Thanks

Hi, not sure the best place to put this question but I'm looking for confirmation that I'm using the best settings at each stage to produce the highest quality DVD. I'm recording hockey games, editing the video, then burning to DVD. Here are the details:

Recording using Vixia HF200 HD camcorder. Set to MXP, highest quality, 24 mbps.

Copying *.mts files to PC and using Sony Vegas 9.0 to edit.

Rendering to *.mpg and using DVD Architect to create/burn DVD.

Alternatively, are there more efficient ways to do this and get the same results? Such as using the FXP mode to record and use less memory if it will retain the same quality?

Thanks in advance for any advice and guidance!

Sorry for taking too long to answer but thank you for everything. I've been making a few short clips just to test the shutter speeds and some of them really improve the look of my videos and i'll soon be getting some of those Azden microphones.

Using different shutter speeds will produced a better feel to your footage when motion is involved.

Videomaker had a good article about making your footage appear more film like.

http://www.videomaker.com/article/12720/

also, read this article too

http://www.videomaker.com/article/13747/

As for sound. Depending on the project, I use wireless lapel mics. Audio Technica pro-88w is a good one for $150, and the microphone canon makes for the camera, 2591 B002, that fits right in to the mini shoe is good to.

Azden.com is a good source of inexpensive mics. They have a stereo shotgun mic for about $100

Thank you for your replies. To hmueller: thanks for the sugestion as I was not sure what was the best procedure. Another thing you said that has always bothered me was sound quality.. I'm thinking about buying one of Canon's DM-100 directional mic but is there another good alternative that doesn't cross the $100 dollar range? this also goes to rexomus and anyone who had this camera or thinks they can help.

To rexomus: so are you saying that changing to 1/48 is the better way to do it? and thankz cause I thought I had to set it to 24p but you're right. The footage is still 60i, just with the look of 24p.

I had the same issue with the HF200, same as the 20 but no internal memory. I have found that if I change the shutter setting to 1/48, the film effect is amplified. Also, when editing in Sony Vegas Pro, set your properties to 1920x1080 @ 60i. 24p on the Hf 20 and 200 is just an effect. All the footage is captured at 60i regardless. I hope this helps.

Whenever possible, do the white balance in camera at the time of shooting.

The Canon is great. I am not sure about your model though. The Canon HV40 and the HF S20/21 should shoot 24P natively.

There are many effects in Sony Vegas but you should concentrate on your shooting tecnique first. Make sure that you use a tripod wherever possible, and that your focus is sharp. Blurriness and non-smooth video is more likely caused by technique rather than the fact that you are using 24P.

The success of your films will be determined by your sound quality. Be sure to use good external microphones with manual level adjustment which the Canon allows.

Hi! I'm new here and I would like you guys to give me some ideas on how to make The Canon Vixia's 24p (through pulldown) to look even more like film because my videos have that sort of blurriness that you find in film but they don't run as smoothly. The image is great but isn't there a plug-in for Sony Vegas 8.0 Pro to make everything more "dreamy" and soft? Thankz

I am working and trying to be a filmmaker and I've been reading a lot about filmmaking so I bought a couple of books and I can say I'm a little bit knowlegeable about what to do as a director but I don't have a lot of money to rent a Genesis or a Panavison camera so I have to work with what I have. I'll keep you updated about my first effeort. I wrote 2 scripts, 1 es suppsed to be a short and the other almost a feature lengh film (maybe 70 minutes long). I hope to start shooting by July so any help would be more than welcome. :)

Another thing..do you think I should make the whole white balancing process in-camera or doing the post-production?

Mr. Porter,

Pinnacle Studio 14 software's system requirements mention clockspeed at 2.4 Ghz, RAM at 4 GB, but nothing on the 32 or 64-Bit configuration. I will take your word on the operating system's ability to run a 32-bit application. I might even upgrade to Win 7 just to be sure.

Thank you kindly.

Romeo,

Should be just fine. However, check the system requirements for PS14 as to whether it supports the 64-bit environment. Even if it doesn't, Vista will most likely run it as a 32-bit application (x86). Just make sure your system has a CPU, GPU and RAM enough to push AVCHD video. That should be in the PS14 system req's list too.
