Whether you've been in the biz for a while or just starting up a hobby, the big question is; Should I buy or rent?

In my experience, I've done both and there were pro's and con's with either. These days with gear being truly affordable, there is an incentive to purchase equipment and accessories outright. However, there are unseen costs that come with both purchasing and renting gear. Here's a vid from Caleb Pike that gives a solid analysis of this very important question....

Hi to the folks out there,

I've recently bought a HP Pro book 6560b primarily as it still has a
firewire port so I can still transfer video from my Legria HV40. I have
installed Premiere 5.5. but when I try to capture the video I get jerky
pictures with a frame or so 'sticking'. This seems to happen in
conjunction with a sound like a burrrp/buzz. This noise is very evident
when playing a Youtube video and am wondering whether it's interfering
with something else/program I'm not aware of?

I have changed the firewire driver to the 'OHCI compliant host
controller (Legacy) as suggested on another site, rolled back the audio
driver 'IDT high definition codec' to a previous version all to no
avail.

I've used HDVsplit to transfer the video and it still happens though not
as badly as with Premiere, which makes me think it's something else on
the laptop?

I'm sure it's NOT my camera as I can capture video to my desktop that
runs XP. In anticipation of the next question "why don't I capture using
my desktop PC and then transfer the footage to my laptop?" Answer -
It's at home and I work abroad hence I have the laptop to save space.

The video runs smooth as silk via the camera viewfinder. Any ideas, suggestions, solutions will be most gratefully received.

I'm running windows 7 professional, 64bit with SP1 on a HP Probook
6560b, Intel (R) Core TM i5 2410M CPU@2.30GHz 2.3GHz with 4gigs of RAM.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi there,

I'm trying to find out how to do this without loosing quality. I've got to make a product show for my friend when he goes to his presentation. The video will run from a DVD to a Monitor via a HDMI to DVI cable.

Yet it seems this method causes to much quality to be lost. I'm not sure what video setup I should use.

For instance PAL DV 720x576 (16:9) which has the 1.4 pixel aspect ratio OR

use the square pixels PAL DV which is 1050x576.

Can anyone clarify which would be the best or an alternative, I was thinking maybe just creating it in 1080P then running it from a computer?

Thanks.

I'm trying to transfer video from a Canon ZR800 camcorder to my pc using a 4-pin to 4-pin firewire. The pc recognizes the camcorder no problem, but as soon as I start the transfer process, the video image in the preview screens of both the camera and the pc show that the video is randomly pixelating as the video is transferring.

When I disconnect the firewire connection the video image on the camera plays smoothly....plug it back into the pc with the cable and it pixelates.

I have tried the camera and the cable on two different computers with the same result.

Also tried turning off the lcd screen on the camera as the video is transferred and still see pixelation on the computer screen

Is it likely that the cable is defective or am I missing something?

Many thanks,
Helen

Greetings. I have been looking for ways to make money with the video skills I learned in college. I came to the conclusion that I could easily shoot real estate photos and videos for agents in the small community I live in. (I will be getting a Canon D7 in the coming months, so would use that.)

The idea is, going to the major real estate firms out here, I think its only 2. Going to them with the option to contract me as there video/photo guy. Instead of connecting with the countless agents, and working for them. Connecting with the firms itself. so that when any of its many agents needs photos or video, the firm just says "we got a guy for that, we'll send him out tomorrow."

Is this a somewhat good business plan for such a venture? And if so, how would I appropriately charge for such a service? a standard by the hour rate? Or on a per visit system? And what would be an appropriate cost for such work? I wanna make money, but I also wanna be competitively priced. I can debate semiotics in film, but was taught NOTHING about video business practices in college lol. So any comments or thoughts are welcomed.

Thank you for your time.

I am trying to get the same exact quality that I see in the preview window after I render it to a mpeg2 or avi. The problem is that I want the grainy film look and other effects to be the same in the rendered final video, but what I'm getting is a crisp video that cleaned up everything. I tried to choose the preview option for the full resolution quality under the file/properties tab but all that did was make it more pixelated and the quality worse but still cleaned up the video. Could someone please help with this? Using Sony Vegas Pro 10 by the way.

I am having trouble viewing my material after I make edits. I always have to render things, and the playback often stalls after only being able to see a few seconds of what I have done. I tried everything from watching in a smaller screen, to adjusting the RT playback, but it still stutters and stops during playback.

The other question is, Why do I have to render so much. I convert my .mts files to .mov using Toast. I convert using the Apple ProRes 422 codec. If I have two tracks of video that I lay down on top of each other, when I go back to play one I have to render the one I black out. I spend entirely to much time rendering when I know people are editing much faster.

Thanks

Hi guys!
I am just an amature video editor, so I need some help trying to figure out how to use a feature for video editing. I have Studio 14 HD. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I want to have a video overlay on a video....not sure if that is the correct term(s), but kinda like this:
YouTube - Final Fantasy XIII Demo -- running around and battle

I want something like that; a gauge filling up to the end, ENGLISH text in the actual bars (which I can edit, so I can put anything I want).

Also want to know if I can make the cursor (the white glove in this case) move like that, so I can tell it where to go as I edit.

Also would like to know if the above solution is also the same as adding an Xbox 360 achievement notification.
This is all assuming I have the correct software.
Thanks regardless of any future solution, and thanks for taking the time for reading my post. Heres to hoping!

Here's a first look at the Canon C300 Cine Style CMOS Sensor Video Camera. Built upon all the best bits and more from their HDSLR line of cameras, the C300 looks to be an awesome rig for those interested in serious filmmaking. However, the price of the camera body and lenses put it right into the range of the RED ONE without the same powerful image resolution.

Had they made this new rig intended for the Prosumer/Pro market, they would have dropped another 'atom bomb' on the DSLR industry. Hopefully, they'll put all that tech into the 5D MkIII! In the meantime, enjoy the tremendous advances canon has made in removing the 'jello effect', moire and noise at high ISO.

I've dropped a couple of vids which show innovative ways to use your tripod to get shots beyond the standard 'Stand and Pan', 'Stand and Tilt'. Here's Derek Beck with some 'Tripod Tricks' to add to the list of thing you can do with your tripod from dramatic tilt zooms to using your 'pod as a steadycam rig.

Hello, I'm a graphic designer but have done some small video projects in the past. I was approached by a potential client wanting 130 1 minute commercials for his custom pen website. I attached the following proposal, thinking my rates are fair and he's telling me to quote him lower (even though he won't get other quotes nor tell me a budget he has in mind!) Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you!!

----

$225 per 1 minute commercial (10% discount based on 150+ commercials, anything under 150 is $250)

(includes script, filming, producing, directing, equipment, editing, rendering)

Minus $20 per commercial if script is provided.

I viewed a few videos from discountmugs.com and I could guarantee a higher production value than their commercials.

If the price fits into your budget, the next step would be to hire an actor/actress. Unless you have someone in mind you would like to be the spokesperson, I highly recommend that I hire a professional. I'm hoping to find one for $10 per commercial (based on 150 commercials is $1500 and I'm estimating 30 hours of filming required for this project.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?<wbr></wbr>v=8fFJb_FnCF0&feature=player_<wbr></wbr>embedded

Sample of what he showed me he wants for 130 of his products.

At the back there were lights which appeared in the video in front of public from top to bottom.(vertical). I wonder if there is any solution to remove that light?

Hello,

I'm a first time post(er). I wanted to ask for alittle advice before I upgrade.

I broadcast live games, and events with 4 Canon HV30s. Their connected to my PC via firewire. Firewire gives me excellent quality, but its short! My longest cable it 25'

What should I use for long distances? My camera outputs composite, component, and HDMI.

Is anyone using 100' component cable? HDMI? Am I overlooking a better way? I will need to buy capture cards as well (possibly Intensity Pro) but I want to figure out what cable I should go with while keeping my great quality. HELP! lol

Hi everyone,

My name is Florian, I'm 21, I'm new here and I'm am found of video (from
shooting to editing). I'm not good enough to become a director I think,
but I practice video at my own level and take a huge pleasure in doing
this.

I have just created a kind of web-tv about a six month trip in East
Asia. On this website, you can follow trips, portraits, cities, clips,
places, parties, etc...

http://www.asiantriptv.com

I hope you will enjoy it !

You can see here one of the videos, this is the portrait of a young indonesian girl shot in Singapore, also student at Harvard.

http://vimeo.com/26861400

Any feedback is welcomed and will help me a lot in my project.

See you soon
