Thanks Rob,

I'l check out BlackMagic. I'm toying with the thought of adding USB3.0 to my MacBook Pro (with ExpressCard expansion slot).

I guess the hunt is still on for detailed specs...

I know BlackMagic Design has I/O options that implement the USB3.0 connection, so I assume the connection is quite capable. However, I still haven't found whether or not USB3.0 transfers data as packets (like USB2.0) or if it's a steady, constant stream (like FW800 and eSATA).

Hi All,

I've been using FireWire800 for the past 6 years, and eSATA more recently.

USB 2.0 was simply never good for streaming video playback, due to the technical specs.

Are you using USB 3.0? Is it any good for HD video? I've found surprisingly little info on this topic.

Happy Editing,

 Hi,

Looking for a firewire card to use in a laptop is a PMCIA card this may be scarce. The only advantage of the old technologies is that you can obtain it at a very low price. Inconvenience you have to know the system before to buy it or have a resource to guide you or you risk to buy many material. I think that birdcat suggest the best solution.

I guess I negleted to say that my friend has a laptop so signmax first option would not work. Now, the PCMCIA http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815108019&cm_re=1394_to_usb-_-15-108-019-_-Product is $100 ontop of the purchace of an RCA converter. This is getting very expensive. It's too bad they don't make an RCA input on that PCI Express card. It's funny how the industry always seems to have a way to connect anything to anything except the only thing that you want they don't have. Thanks for your help I will relay this valuable info to my friend.

You have several options.

The first (and by far the easiest) is to purchase a combo VHS/DVD recorder. I got one at COstCo for about $140 a year ago and I have, with the click of one button, recorded VHS tapes to DVD's (ok two more buttons - menu & finalize). You can then bring the DVD into your NLE and clean it up there - VOB files are really MPEG-2 files - you can just copy & rename or treat the DVD as a camera version and capture using your normal means for that.

Another option is, if you're using a desktop, do as Max suggested and install a firewire card - I recently go this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815287005) and it works well for under $20.

If you are using a laptop, there are PCMCIA or PCI Express cards like this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815108019&cm_re=1394_to_usb-_-15-108-019-_-Product

I would not go down the road of the converters, like the Dazzle, which connect your vcr to the USB ports - I have tried them in the past and they did not work well at all.

Good evening,

I beleive I'll have to download the updates from the website because the only buttons I have on the top menu are: Copy to PC, Play, Edit, Copy to Media, Network, Capture, Search, Delete, Refresh, Settings, Operating Instructions and Exit. I went through all of them and none have an update tab/button.

I agree with you. The Panasonic website is confusing. I spent a lot of time last night going through everything to find an update. I'll see if I can find the 2.1 L141 update.

Hi,

Is easy to solve this, go to computer store or Staple store buy a firewire card and install in your computer. This cost less than $50 also you can find second hand for few buck over eBay. New computer has no Firewire because new technology focus on USB 2.0 and now the new USB 3.0 USB cable is standard printer cable, firewire cable need to be purchased is not a current product. Probably you can find a complete high quality old capture system for 10% of the original price.

every product for converting analog (VHS) to a digital format seems to have an output via FireWire to the input of my computer. But as I'm finding out not all PC's have a FireWire port. What now? Is there a USB solution or how else does one get there old home movies onto the computer that is not equiped with FireWire. For now, my friend has to bring his crap over to use my computer where then I have to share so that he can get it onto his computer.

Often times just plugging the camera through USB will allow the computer to see it as an external drive. If this happens, you could transfer your files as you would between drives.

1) Upgrade from the Panasonic website your HD Writer AE version the latest is 2.1

2) Use a short USB cable or simply try another USB cable

3) Use Rear USB input.

4) Deactivate your Antivirus

Good evening,

I'm having a bit of problems with HD Writer 1.5, the program provided with my HDC-SD10 camcorder.

Each time I connect my camcorded to my PC (via the provided USB wire) and start downloading my recorded videos on my hard drive, an error pops up. It tells me that my USB connection is unstable and that I should try to connect my camcorder to a USB port at the rear of my computer.

I installed the update from Panasonic but the problem still occurs. I tried connecting the camcorder to every single USB port of my computer and it doesn't change anything. The download progress goes up to 3% and it stops and notifies me of the error.

Thanks in advance,

The difference between firewire and USB is that firewire transfers data in a steady stream, while USB transfers data in bursts or packets. If you're transferring video clips from a camera that uses some form of solid state media, there's no difference between using firewire and USB, except for the fact that firewire will transfer faster.

Crafters is correct, but dropped frames isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's not destroying your video clips or anything. It just simply means your computer wasn't able to read the data fast enough from the USB device. Dropped frames is more annoying than it is damaging.

At the end of the day though, choose firewire over USB.

If you are just transfering files USB is okay. It is slower than firewire but will get the job done.

Now if you are steaming video, live or playback, with USB you do run the risk of dropped frames etc. Firewire is your freind here.

I'm a little nervous about trusting a USB2.0 transfer. I suspect it is going to drop frames, glitch, or get the audio out of sync, or some other annoying thing. But since I don't really know what I am talking about, over to you guys.... which do you think is best and why? And am I really going to suffer if I use a USB input?

Reason for question: Getting harder to find devices that are not cameras that have Firewire output

Not really, I mean not through USB anyway.

You can get a component (or composite) card for computer. If you get a component card (component's only video), you'll need an RCA to 1/8" for pc's mic input

Hello Phillip, the USB the camcorder has is to transfer the video data to your computer. Like you mentioned with Firewire you are good to go, but to use the webcam with a USB port you need something like the EasyCAP. With this device you connect the composite cables of your camcorder, install the software included and it should identify it as a webcam. I bought this device a long time ago and it had serve its purpose (using a camcorder as a webcam), although the maximum resolution it capture is 720x480 and the installation (in Windows) is a little tedious, but for the price it work decently. There must be other more devices for this, but this is the only one I had used. Search Google for "USB video adapter", it should give you a few ideas.

I'm considering purchasing a TM700, and I'd like to be able to use it as a webcam.

As far as I can tell from the specs, the TM700 has a USB port but no FireWire port. In a videomaker article on choosing a WebCam, it says if you have a FireWire port you're good to go. But no mention is made of USB ports.

Can you run this camera as a WebCam over a USB connection?

"Is it difficult to do add a firewire card?"

you'd have to open up the computer and slide the card into the matching PCI slot....It's not really hard, but it might be a bit uncomfortable if you've never done it before.

Going by the information on http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-DCR-HC32-Camcorder-Review.htm# If you have the base station for that camera you have USB connectivity.

Going by http://www.desktopreview.com/default.asp?newsID=743&Review=HP+Compaq+CQ5110f there is room for a FIREWIRE card unless you have purchased other options - because I see only one open bus on the stock m/b image.

This is one of those times when it would be really handy to have a good relationship with a local computer shop. Firewire cards are inexpensive ($20 or so?), so that's a good thing.

I have a Compaq CQ5110F. Is it difficult to do add a firewire card? How do I know if my computer will support that? Thank you!
