Rob, the new Mac Pro's do not need a raid card, it is right on the board now. I just got one about 3 months ago and it is really simple to do. One problem I can see from his current system is that he only has two gig of ram. If he goes to http://www.crucial.com it can scan his system and see how much he can cram into it.

Also a few 1.5 terabyte hard drives could be in order, they are getting cheaper every day. Get another 250 gig hard drive and then you can set the two 250's to raid 1 and the 1.5's to raid 0 and you could be rocking and rolling.

One question, are those Intel processors or are they another brand. If they are Intel you may also be able to plug in a graphics processing card, if FCP accepts them that is. I use Premiere and love the Mercury Play Back engine as it helps to speed up the rendering process.

Hope this helps.

I have a Mac Pro with that same processor. I never sit around wishing it was faster, so I'm wondering if the problem your media management. You only listened on hard drive - the 250GB drive. Is that the only drive in your computer and the only drive you use for video editing? If so, then yes your computer will be very slow and it will be more cost effective to by the proper storage devices.

But if you are handling your media correctly and still need a faster computer, buying new Mac Pro will last longer because they're expandable and they stuff more processors in them. So it takes longer for them to be perceived as "slow."

If you upgrade to the new FCP, you're stuck with FCP X, which doesn't open old projects. I think Apple is still offering FCS (FCP7), but there's a catch to it or something.

And as for backup, well, you need to have a hard drive (or preferably a RAID) dedicated to your projects and a hard drive dedicated to backing up the memory cards that your camera records to (if you've made the leap to solid state recording). Then you need to back up both of those drives. G-Tech is a good source for RAIDs and hard drives.

I edit film with FCP and I have reached a point where I need a better computer. The Mac Pro I have now dates from 2006/2007 and is way to slow for my needs. The question now is: should I upgrade the computer I have or should I buy a new iMac or Mac Pro. I would appreciate any advice! I'm of course looking for the most cost effective solution.

This is what I have today:

Mac Pro

2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon

2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

Hard-disk: 232,44 GB

I might also have to upgrade my Final Cut Pro as it is as old as the computer: FCP 5.1.4 What would you recommend here?

I need a computer to edit film (possibly HD) and also a good way to do my back-up. My internet connection isn't very fast...

Thank you in advance!

Harper,

Budget, Creative Goals and Production Goals, are the three main things that will influence your choice. Obviously moving up to Vegas will give you more pro level choices in your edits and you're already familiar with the interface. Upgrading from Platinum to Vegas shouldn't be too expensive. Camera wise, tape is cheap, reliable and there are still plenty of options for inexpensive gear. It is however, a bit more labor intensive and is more time consuming to use during digitizing than using solid -state based gear. Solid-state work flow is faster more expensive (though prices are dropping quickly on certain card formats) and can make one lazy concerning logging footage which will cost you time later in the edit bay when searching for uncatalogued clips.

Solid-state is the wave of the future. I have primarily tape-based SD and HD gear, but am moving bit by bit into a solid-state workflow. Tape is still reliable and will be for a few more years, but eventually it will be phased out. Do your research on your camera choices with concern towards consumer, prosumer or professional level equipment. The level of camera you purchase will positively or adversely free up or curtail your creativity concerning the look of your work. Not saying that having a crap or top of the line cam' will absolutely make your work look bad or good. However, it will affect your ability to make your work look its best. Lastly, don't forget about your budget! The goal is to spend your money 'well'. Yeah you could chop up a bunch of zombies with a broadsword, but your arms will get tired faster. That long dagger or shortsword will mean you'll have to get closer, but your arms will last longer! Your camera choice is similar to that rather off subject metaphor.

I'm doing web video only. Been using Vegas Platinum 8.0, and I love it. I've learned to really make it sing. Now - I have definite plans to upgrade something around the first of 2011. My options are: go to Vegas Pro (unltd tracks might be nice) or upgrade the cam. I love recording to the SD card. I could go up to an HD cam, or I could even go to 3CCD, but that would mean recording to tape. I'm in the exploratory stage right now.

I would appreciate your suggestions.

The forums should be back to normal again. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Earlier today some changes were made to the forum software. Our forum software (bbPress) was integrated with BuddyPress.

In the future this will add a much more social aspect to the Videomaker website. For now we've tried to make the change as unnoticeable as possible.

Here are a few of the recent changes.

Gravatar support.

Better Private Messaging (includes email notification)

Profiles and avatars moved from bbPress to BuddyPress. If your avatar looks a little different, try uploading it again (or use Gravatar.)

In the next week or so... the ability
to log into the site using Facebook.

Please respond in this thread if you see any bugs.

Thanks,

Mikec,

You can go the "El Cheapo" route with a Glidecam Body Pod. For less than $200, it's a strap based setup and will allow you to 'wear a suit' with it. Be advised since it is strap based the 'Pod' is tricky to use as you supply the balance. Once you get the hang of it, the pod is fairly easy to use. I've used it with a GC4k for a pro rigged XL1s. It works a lot better with a smaller cam with a flip out LCD so you don't have to get an external monitor. You can wear and use the Pod longer than holding the grip alone or wearing the wrist guard. Ultimately though you'll want to get a Smooth Shooter vest as it will give you more stability.

http://www.glidecam.com/product-body-pod.php

I plan to mostly use it in short increments, mainly for establishing shots of the venue. Thank you for the feedback. I think the next thing on my list is a glidetrack, and then hopefully a vest after that. I've heard the wrist guards work well but you get really sweaty, which is not good when you're in a suit.

I dunno what the difference is, but I thought I should give you a head up about the fact that these are hard to use without the body vest. The weight of your camera and glidecam is too much for your wrist, and you will be lucky to get about 10 minutes of shooting

There is a $200 price difference between the two, so I'm trying to figure out why the HD series is so much more expensive (if it's worth it). Also, does anyone know how often upgrades to this series are released? I don't want to buy the HD if they're going to upgrade in April.

Thank you again WBMP. Cooincidentally, I was playing with ProShow Producer last night and really got into the more advanced features. I do notice there are less transition effects than Studio but I only used them when it was for fun, rather than serious shows. I heard Studio had stability problems but since 11, I have not experienced any. It has crashed but less than a handful of times in the past several years. Save, Save, and then save.

I would like to hear from others if they feel Premeire Pro or Sony Vegas as "that" much better IF the user is at the enthusiast level and looking for easy usage of advanced features.

JohnnyGP,

I use ProShow Producer (not Gold - - The lower-end of the Photodex products) for use in creating slide-shows only, as I can still control keyframing, etc. I find it a bit more powerful than the Pinnacle Studio line, as it relates to creating slideshows. I would recommend ProShowProducer. My problem with the Avid/Pinnacle Studio series is the constant upgrading and/or revisions to their software. Over the years, many Studio clients have requested Pinnacle add additional video and audio tracks to the program, but Pinnacle doesn't seem to listen to their editing audience feedback often. I have used Pinnacle Studio since version 7.x and have upgraded over the years as they compile more or change features into their product, but not without lots of headaches. Pinnacle Studio's upgrade path is for the birds. Upgrading from Studio 9 to 10, 10 to 11, then 11 to 12 was very painful over the years, as they change their included third-party feature offerings. By the way, I found the last "stable" version of Studio was v9.x.x. It simply turned me off of their product.

Photodex's ProShow Producer seems to be as equal or a bit more powerful (feature sets and editing tools) than Pinnacle Studio. I understand many professional photographer's move to Producer than Studio to create client slideshows. Photodex offers the same background template sets, themes, and overlays for additional online download fee, similar to those offered by Avid/Pinnacle.

Anyway, my thoughts.....Hope this helps!

Good Luck!

wbmp, excellent response and very helpful to me as well. I have used nearly every PC editing program to various degrees and Studio 12 as met my expectations best for the reason you gave, "If you are expecting the same ease of use in FCE, Premiere, Vegas, or Liquid as you have experienced with Avid/Pinnacle Studio 12 (i.e. templates, overlays, etc.), your expectation would be too high. All have some templates to get you started, but you need to know how to perform key-framing and other editing basics." Studio 12 makes projects simple, fast, and easy. Once I am prepared to create my own key framing and my own templates, I would move to a more sophisticated program such as Premiere or FCE should I ever move to a Mac.

Jeff4y, it would be nice to hear your thoughts if you do make the move.

On a related topic, I recently started playing with ProShow Producer and so far have been impressed. It might over take my useage of Studio 12. Does anyone else have any thoughts on ProShow Producer?

Jeff4y,

I have to respectfully disagree with "pseudosafari" about whether FCE is a lateral or upgrade move. FCE is much more powerful than Pinnacle/Avid Studio 12 in many aspects. As a Windows and Mac-based editor, Studio 12 and iMovie are considered pretty much the same with respect to editing level and power (what you can and cannot do functionally). If you are new to video editing, then stick with Intel/Pinnacle Studio 12 or move up to Adobe Elements or Sony Vegas....even Avid Liquid would be an upgrade to Studio 12 on a Windows-based machine. If you want to move to the Mac platform (iMac, etc.) then iMovie comes pre-loaded in iLife, as the basic video editor. If you are an intermediate editor wanting to move to the Mac platform and place more of the editing power in your hands, then Final Cut Express is a good start for later moving to Final Cut Studio in progression.

Some Caveats please, FCE v4 only ingests DV/HDV and AVCHD video formats natively. If you are working with other formats, you would first need to convert them with a free tool like...MPEG Steamclip. There are other tools available for conversion too. If you are expecting the same ease of use in FCE, Premiere, Vegas, or Liquid as you have experienced with Avid/Pinnacle Studio 12 (i.e. templates, overlays, etc.), your expectation would be too high. All have some templates to get you started, but you need to know how to perform key-framing and other editing basics. FCE has a learning curve, as does Premiere, Vegas, or Liquid. FCE is for those wishing to upgrade their editing knowledge and skillset towards moving to Final Cut Studio, much the same way someone wanting to move to learning Avid or Adobe editors, but with the understanding there is a learning curve.

FCE is a great editing suite and very powerful, but if you are expecting to jump in and use it the same way as Studio 12...it won't happen. As with all semi-pro/pro editing suites, practice, training, and repeated use is the key. Pinnacle Studio 12 while very basic, does have some intermediate functionality, but only has one basic video/image track, one sound track, and one overlay track (voice-overs, etc.). As a difference, FCE can handle up to 99 Video tracks, 99 Sound tracks, etc., in its timeline for compositing, etc.

Finally, I recommend you research and learn as much as possible about video editing suites and their technical specifications, based on your requirements (what you want and expect to do with the editing suite) before you jump to any editing suite...Windows OS or Mac OS platform!

Just my honest opinion. Good Luck!

In my opinion (just my opinion) it's a lateral move. You'd be better off stepping up to Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas Pro, or the Mac equivalent if you're going the Mac route. I worked with Studio for years, since version 8 or so. When I finally got up the nerve to change, I went with Adobe's package because of all they offer (you can use Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, etc, together easily). I also stayed PC because I have more experience on them and didn't want to learn a new OS even after working with the Mac for a test run. This is just my opinoin. Others might have ideas about what FCE does that Studio doesn't, like particular features, but the price range is still pretty much the same. If you want to move up you have to move up the next price range. The bright side is that the next "price" range is pretty much the tops!

I'm thinking of moving from Studio 12 (on a PC) to FCE4 (on an iMac). Would you consider this an upgrade or a lateral move?
