The guys who have posted here are right - ya gotta pay your dues, learn the ropes, gain experience, ect. BUT...

...I'm also a believer in, forgive the cliche, "True Grit" and the benefits of someone who toughs it through to get the door of opportunity open. No, you don't want to leap into a sea full of sharks (and that is what it can seem like at times in the video business) but you can test the waters, ease into action, then start kicking into higher gears as you develop the necessary skills.

Some people are too inclined, too often, to spend too much time paying for a education, researching the next best thing and putting off ANY forward action. That is not everyone's way. Some do it dumbly by jumping in on an emotional whim, others do it smartly by cashing in on the practical reasoning their left-side brain provides but they often lack perception from their creative (if any) right side. There are a boatload of folks who sense the opportunity, know their limitations (mentally, emotionally, physically and fiscally) but are willing to intelligently "jump in" depending somewhat on the "luck" and lightning strikes that might occur.

So, while there are a bounty of practical ways to approach this business - and the above "pay your dues" approaches are a reasonable suggestion - there are also elements, voices and strengths within you that might push you harder toward jumping in.

I was impressed (and still am) with the story of Lee Stranahan, former renown Video Toaster guru who, with the support of his working wife took a year off from making money to delve into and learn the NewTek system that was wowing the Amiga community with its video editing capabilities. Sure, Lee had some general knowledge of things, I do not remember his pre-Toaster background, but nonetheless he invested a year into digesting and becoming intimately familiar with a completely new system. The effort paid off as he gained a reputation for knowing the Video Toaster inside and out - to the extent he once released a GREAT how to video that said: "Ten Things You Can't Do with the Video Toaster - and How to do Them!"

So, if you think you can do this, and you WANT to do this, and you feel like you owe yourself the opportunity to make it work for you. Just do it! You'll learn a lot along the way, or quit - either way you've not wussed out of trying. I keep hearing my late Mom, telling me: "Great ideas won't work unless you do."

Grinner,

'2 decades faster than most!' And this applies to Jack and everyone who participates on these forums. Unless you're born into a showbiz family, born wealthy or personally tapped on the shoulder by the 'divine finger', odds are good that getting anywhere in this biz is going to be a long and arduous 'assault'. Half the battle is building up a body of work to make people think you're worth betting their money on. The other and harder half is keeping your spot once you get there.

Nowadays, all the digital revolution has done is make it possible for more people to get started. Nothing's changed about building up a credible body of work and a rep to go with it. Anybody can have dumb enough luck to get 'struck by lightning' once. The real trick is doing it at will and make it create funny animal shapes at the same time.

Grinner,

Lay that 'Reality Whip' to him! Jack Grinner's suggestion may sound harsh, but this is not a business you should jump into haphazardly. You could easily blow a buttload of cash on gear and software then go bankrupt because you didn't have enough experience / skill up front. Hopefully, you've gotten an idea from the posts Sarge recommended.

BTW, congrats Grinner on getting your series picked up.

You obvioulsy are not ready for this venture. It'd be a good idea for you to work in the industry long enough to educate yourself before venturing into an overhead with no bookings. I suggest staffing for 5-10 years then freelancing for at least 5 years. You'll then know your specialty, what tools are required and what that is worth.

Hello,

I am interested in starting a small buisness with video. I would like to offer an editing only service where people would send me there raw footage and i would do some simple editing on their video. This would be charged at a small price. I was wondering what would i need? Would i need any permission and would it work. I would also like to know how much to charge?

 Hi All,

My friend Hans and I have started collaborating on a YouTube comedy series called "Cher on Crack, Sonny is Back." There was no other reason than to do something off-the-wall and be creative about it - not just stand in front of a camera and shout like so many others do (and get millions of hits for). Not knocking that, but everyone has different interests.

Our interests are more about filming technique and post-production... a little bit of scripting and ad-libbing... and having fun with customes, props, green screen, animation, and plain silly entertainment in this angry and serious world.

This video is our 3rd in a series which started out as a green screen test at first. This week, we will be shooting Part 4 with a more defined script. Please feel free to comment here or on YouTube... preferably YouTube. The cam is a Canon XHA1. Our lighting is not yet perfected. Hans Moore does some animation as a hobby. Both of us are recent filmmakers and will be switching from Ulead to Premiere Pro soon.

I really liked the ulead products I also learned the basics on 6.5. I thought they were a great value. I have the 6.5 editer as well as cool 3d and photo impact. I was sorry to see the software dropped by corel. I was going to upgrade to the newer version but once I realized it was not going to be supported I decided to move on.

I have not regretted moving to he Sony Vegas pro product. It was a pretty easy to make the transition since when I purchased from Video guys they included a set of training dvd's that got me up to speed. I liked the product so well that I also bought their cinescore product to go with it.

I can't seem to duplicate the problem with VS11.5 - but have you tried

1) opening a new project and converting you avi files to something else?

2) at the end of the Wizard editing in VS11 instead of making a file?

From what I understand about avi files, there are a number of different things that can be wrapped inside the avi. A little over a year ago I had a little computer crash and, upon resurection, I couldn't plave avi's that were made on my little camera, I had to have the DivX player installed to see them. You could be expereincing the same sort of thing - a codec.

 Hi,

I have searched for a couple days now for an answer to this problem, but am coming up with nothing helpful.

My problem: I used Ulead 11's Movie Wizard to create a photo DVD which includes some video clips from my camera as well. It came out quite nicely, along with some more editing from me.

The problem is, when I play the project with all the layers, the video clips return as a black screen with audio only. BUT, when I play only the video clips, I get everything, audio and visual. I downloaded the Morgan Multimedia codec as per another suggestion, but this hasn't helped, so now I'm completely stumped. I tried rendering it and playing it back, but am left with black screens and audio only. I've tried removing the transitions before and after the clips, and I've tried putting the video on an overlay track, but nothing has worked.

The method I used for putting the mjpeg files into the project was just choosing the 'insert video' option on the project's control panel. I don't think i can 'capture' those clips as they are already copied onto the computer and the program detects them as .avi files.

Any insight would be wonderful! Thank you!

1. I have a registered copy of Ulead Workshop 2 and I think it is not working quite right, called Ulead/Corel, who say they no longer support the product. I had to uninstall Ulead Workshop a while back and it keeps asking me to register it even though it is. So, here I am. I have created a 5 minute Flash movie that I am converting to AVI and then burning onto DVD to play on TV. At this time it seems I have to burn two seperate files as only the menu movie will loop and not the intro. That's the first problem. Second problem is when setting the loop it is supposed to play up to a 254 minute movie and loop over again but it stops at 4 minutes 14 secs. I have tried to reset over and over but it is stuck at 4 minutes 14 seconds.

2. What is the best method and codec to convert Flash file to AVI to DVD with the highest resolution possible? When I create the Flash Movie file and then using MiniRiver's Flash to AVI converter it looks great on the computer, but once I burn it to DVD the resolution really sucks and the file is only about 100 meg so there is plenty of room left. I think it is being rerendered in the burn. I am trying to achieve near broadcast quality. I tried uncompressed but the file is then over 4 gig.

Any help and suggestions would be so appreciated. Also any ideas to create the best quality Flash video without using 29 different programs would be welcome as Flash has some nice text/object FX but not great transitions.

My system is a Dell 8300 P4 2 gig ram, IDE drive and two SATA 200+ Drives, ATI x150 video card.

Thanks so much, Wolf

you can add your clip again and draw in the clip handles on the side to realign the time and segments. So, instead of one 5 minute clip you can make a 4+1 minute clip; the last minute being filtered.  good luck
